Anyone have recent experience modifying a quiet baffle? I plan on trying some mods to get the tone between the hard rasp of the stock baffle and the choked off quiet baffle. Seems you should be able to tune the baffle by drilling etc. and find a happy medium. If I can't, the pro pipe is for sale. Which would be a shame. Thanks

My quiet baffle is in the trash.

While the stock baffle is really louder than I would like, I absolutely love what happens when I twist the throttle. So, for the time being, it's earplugs. Which, as we all know, we should be wearing anyway.

I just found out about this...might be worth a try for you. Cheaper than buying a new exhaust system, by far:

Good riding buddy just bought an FP3 to tune his wife's new 1200 Sportster. He said he absolutely loved using it; fast, easy, simple instructions. It should work great for you.

I think it is a worthy experiment. The quiet baffle is too much and the stock baffle is too loud. I want to end up with reasonable sound pressure and a priority on tuning the back pressure with the diffuser plates. I'll try the stock baffle and diffuser and go from there. Kinda excited to fix this issue.

Absolutely. I was just pointing out what I've seen with those diffuser plate set ups.

I have a fp3. Love it. Your initial post made me not want the pro pipe. My Reinhart 2-1 was perfect on my SG. So that's what I'm gonna do.

I have the propipe on my 2003 Fatboy and love it, great looks and performance. I put it on my RGS for the same reason, but the noise is too much. It isn't the decibels as much as the "rasp". The rasp sound reminds me of a musical instrument that is out of tune, in other words the frequency seems off. That is what I am trying to solve for. Would like to hear the Reinhart, but I want to finish the propipe experiment before I throw another wad of cash at the problem. I think the quiet baffle is hard on the motor, based on the sound and the fact that they're was so much soot.

V&H is a great reputable company and has spent countless hours on R&D on all there products. I dont understand why people try to modify stuff that is already proven to perform out of the box.

Fair question:
Answer: Performance is spot on. the modification motivation-- because it is too LOUD (for me) out of the box and the quiet baffle is too restrictive bye bye performance. When I bought the quiet baffle, the V&H tech told me that it was worth a try, but that many folks are not happy with it.
Does that help explain the "why"? What they need is a goldilocks baffle.

I finally rode behind the bike I was talking about. They usually make me lead. It does it all the time especially under acceleration. It actually will hurt your ears if your too close to them.

Keep us posted and make a sound file. Seems no one has thought of this until you and I've seen the sound complaint enough to that you may solve a lot of issues for people. Curious to see how it performs. Will you be able to add plates to adjust it?

Update

Results: The sound is awesome! Btw...Turns out lots of folks have done this, you just have to do some searching :) . Anyway I drilled and tapped the endcap of my propipe by hand and bought a 5" diffuser. Today I Got around to putting a few miles on and so far I like this setup. Removed the raspy sound, but still has plenty of soul without the --"out of frequency" tone. I need to get a few more miles on and check the proximity of the diffuser to the rear fender. So far so good, seems to have the same amount of power, maybe more torque?. I am using a FP3 auto tuner right now and should have new cams in by end of January, so a dyno tune is in order, if I can find someone I am comfortable with tuning both the intake, but also be open to tuning the exhaust.

I saw those, thanks. I would need a 5". Don't see one of those. I like it though, nice finish.

22 discs should be flowing well. I used lock washers, to collapse them I have about 3 turns in after the screws bottomed. I hope I dont have them too tight.
