OK not fuel management but, I hate my gas cap. I have never had so much trouble putting on a gas cap, and in the morning when it is cold, forget about it. It is a constant fight!! Is it me? I thought it might be me, OK "I am a knuckle head" but NO! I am in the gas station the other day and I look over and there is a road glide same year fighting his gas cap! he stated it is like this all the time even worse when it is cold out side. Any one have this issue? most important question, "if so" what is the solution!!!
Thank you for any help "before I toss this cap down the road".
I have a '16 RG and just got back from a 2 day ride where about 6 fill ups took place and have had zero issues - Not sure where the problem would even be? - Other than an angle the cap may need to be at to begin threading, can't see how it would be an issue?
You can fix it your self just take a file and file down the diameter before the threads took me about 5 mins works like it should now, this was the second new cap they put on.
It is well known on other forums. I am surprised it has not been discussed here? Many are getting new caps from the dealers. Many dealers are already out of them. Many of the new caps start doing it again eventually. What I and many others have done is take some sandpaper (or file) and sand down the outside of the cap below the first thread (very bottom outside edge). Once that is done it works better than it ever has.
That's what I did on both my wife and my 16s. Its fine now...yes warranty would have covered it, but why argue over something that the dealer service people probably "never heard of before".
I have fought with the gas cap on my 15 for the last year, glad to know they will replace it, every time we run into the mountains where temps are below about 50 the cap is very difficult to thread down. Have commented a couple times in dealerships but never an offer to replace it.
Thanks for the post.
just for giggles my purchase date is March 2015...
Take the gas cap off and take it to a file or grinding wheel just below the threaded part. Remove enough material until it drops in to the threaded part easy. Had to fix my 15 and 16
I suspect it's an issue with the plastic cap and threads being sensitive to the thread pattern on the bike. I'd try some WD-40 on the cap and put in on/take it off several times and just make sure the threads are good.
Twice in the past year mine has felt like the threads were galled up while removing the cap. But after getting the cap off it went back in easy........go figure.
Ofcourse when I mentioned it at the dealership, I was told, they never heard about that problem
I was told the same thing yesterday at dealer. They didn't have any in stock and they were on back order. Hmmmm. But they hadn't any known problems with them.
I have a 2016 RGS and had the same issue. I took it back to the dealer, they looked at to make sure I didn't cross thread the cap (no evidence), and then mumbled "I'll be back". Came back with a new cap that screws in super easy. No problems after 5 fill ups.
I thankfully haven't had this problem, but I would REALLY like to thank the genius designer that decided the gas cap console cover should open towards the rear instead of the front. SUCH a P.I.T.A.! LoL
Personally, I prefer it that way. Any splatter while filling doesn't go towards the seat. Maybe it is not an issue for me because I am ambidextrous and pump with my left hand.
Im new to this site. and new to Harleys. but I have had the same problem with the cap being difficult to get started, even in warm weather. I guess I will ask the dealer about it since I now know its not just me.
I have not had this issue with the caps so far, but the cover, now, that's another story. Who came up with that brain dead idea? If they had made the cap flip forward, it would have been so much easier. The aft opening lid makes it hard to get the nozzle in, especially here in commifornia where you have that huge rubber vent return on the head.
Kinda like a foreskin for a gas nozzle.. I was just in Oregon yesterday on my bike, and they don't have that rubber thing up there. Makes things a bit easier.>
Mine was a PIA to screw back on. While at the dealership I mentioned it. They said " yeah we had one yesterday and just replaced the cap". 3 out of 4 bikes on the floor had the same problem. They gave me the only "good" gas cap. Works great now.
Ok, now I have a good reason to not lust after a new RG Ultra when at the dealer. I will just tell myself how much better the gascap is on my '13.
