So, I tried the 9" wind splitter, 12" windsplitter, 14" clockwerks, and the factory windscreen for my '13 road glide ultra and nothing even comes close to the 19" oem for wind management. Unfortunately, it is right in my line of sight. I'm 6'2 and have a road hammock. The wife loves it for her. no wind buffeting and good sound transfer. I'm fed up so it looks like I'm gonna have to break down and try the fugly. Anyone know if Madstad does demos? anyone want to trade for 11' dark smoke HD wind splitter? Anyone have a better solution? recommendations?
Cut your stocker down. Mark the center 2" below your line of vision. Mark the sides lower to create a curve. Take something flexible and bend it to intersect all 3 points. Mark that line. Cut with a fine tooth blade in a sabre saw. Tape the base so that you don't mar the shield. Use something round to make the transition from the cut to the sides. Mark and cut. Finish with a file used in line with the shield. That takes out any dips . A glass shop could help. It's easy enough, and it's free.
This is what I would do as well.
Just cut it down.
I have done this twice and when it was done, it looked like factory done. It is a easy home mod to do yourself. I used a jigsaw with fine cutting blade. Files and sanded then wet and dry sanded the leading edge. The edge looked better then factory when I was done with it.
Do you have your lowers on and the triple tree deflector? I have a nice pocket of air to ride in with lowers, deflector and a 15" freedom shield, had a windvest 14" as well, worked good too.
I have the gaads system, triple trees and fairing mount deflectors, as well as the crash bar deflectors and mid frame air management from the factory. Don't get me wrong, the air management now is perfect. I just don't like the top of the windshield directly in my line of vision.
Mark at Madstad has a 60 day money back satisfaction guarantee. If you don't like it send it back and get your purchase price back, they don't refund shipping cost. I don't know of a better guarantee.
Buy more windshields if you want to. Best recommendation is go with what your wife likes. Happy wife = happy something. You might also try one of those MadStads. I know they look different. But they really work. I see you like to look over your shields. My 14.5 inch MS is lower than the 13" Windvest at its lowest setting and high enough at its highest setting that I look through to top edge. I am actually considering a 16". I am 5'9" for reference. Good luck. But above all Happy Wife =......
I'd try Bucketlisthd's idea first since your wife is happy & you're just trying to see over. But I'll also say I'm a huge madstad fan. Made my wife VERY happy & somewhat better for me too. I'm 6'0" w a 14.5 madstad, but i looked over the stock shield. I actually like the look too. Kind of edgy. I'm on a 13 RGU also.
No pics. It's not really complicated. Did one for a rider in Sturgis with whatever was lying around the house that we were staying at. There's prolly a YouTube video somewhere
I reread your original post and got what you were saying. Somehow I thought you were talking about some funky scallop on the edge like a windsplitter or something. After rereading it I realized you were just talking about tapering the edge to look stock. Got it.Will give it a try. if I screw it up, I'll be in the market for a 14.5 Fugly if anyones sitting on one the want to donate to a retired old soldier on a fixed income. ( by fixed, i mean not broken ;-})
I like they way my madstad looks. I got it for the same reason as you. I wanted to make the wife comfortable and was tired of switching shields. I figured money back if not satisfied = no risk. I love it and I have had several shields. good luck cutting the other down.
Just try the MS and be done with it. I bet once you see it on your bike you won't think it's as ugly as most say and I know that once you ride behind it you won't care how ugly it might be anyway. ?
What RGKen said, besides who cares what other people think about your scoot. I have Madstads on both of my RG's and no one has ever said it looks fugly, funny or [emoji90]y.
One of the best mods I made to my FLTRU was getting a Madstad, got a 14.5" clear, I like it cause it works, I like it cause it is adjustable and I feel like it makes my ride look unique. Got tired of the windshield game. Just give it a try, best way for me to determine it worked was riding the interstate around the big rigs, you immediately can tell from that experience alone.
Sold the 2002 and bought a 2012 FLTRX and again...added the Madstad cause it just plain WORKS as advertised. No buffeting...pretty impressive set-up IMHO.
P.S. There is only "1" drawback to the Madstad...you will probably notice a "slight" decrease in acceleration from what you're used to...I can "feel" that I'm pushing more air than I did with my low-slung shield that "looked" really cool...but "worked" like $hit!
I asked him about that a couple of years ago and he doesn't go to the events. I live here in FL so I have been to his shop a couple of times but I haven't gone to his new location. It is just a small American business and I would guess that it's just not that cost effective for him to travel to events. I do know that guys that come down to Bikeweek or Biketoberfest have ridden to his shop to demo them and made he purchase there. Like has been stated before, he does have the money back guaranty so if you order one and don't like it, you just send it back and he refunds your money. I know there are hardly any that get sent back and that is why he still makes that offer. Also, the price is pretty high for a shield but I spent a lot more trying shields before finding the Madstad. Trying it first would have saved me money in the long run.
