Okay, so the articles I've been reading say that the new 2016 RGU handlebars are about 1.9" taller than the RG & RG Special bars. So what bars are they? Would they happen to be the Tall Boy bars that HD just came out with for the 2015 & up RG's? I haven't made it to the dealer yet to see a 2016 in person, but I hope to do so this weekend so I can check out the bars & speak with the parts guys about them. If anyone knows about these bars, please chime in.
A sales guy told me last week they have 3 different bars for the RG's & RGU's this year. Not sure I believed him. But the bars on the RGU felt great to me. The new model is really getting my attention......
Hey Ron,
I just got my '15 back in March so I'm not ready to trade it in yet! Lol! But I am interested inchecking out a set of the RGU bars.If no one else chimes in here, I'll see what I can find out from the dealer, which will probably be Saturday & I'll post it up. Reason I ask if they are the Tall Boy bars is because HD lists them as 2" more rise than stock RG bars, which is exactly what the articles are saying about the 2016 RGU bars.
I'm in the same boat as you Lil Chief, but that being said, I'm going to look and ride the demos today. I would imagine I am going to order a new bike just like I want it with painted to match inner fairing and other stuff. Probably tour pak and lowers. The RG Ultra has a 17" from wheel and non low profile tire. I really like the 19" on the RGS with the low profile look. So, they better get right with the add ons or it will be and Ultra and order a wheel and tire.
I can't believe I'm getting new-bike-fever. My current RGU is awesome to me. The new ones were a curiosity, but I didn't really believe they'd put the cooled heads on the new RGU. Brakes, forks, stronger engine, good wind management, built in gps, other Rushmore stuff & cooler engine really has me thinking. Even these bars feel great to me & I really like the HD mini-apes I put on mine.
Curious what you find out. I thought they felt a little higher than the RG bars.
Hey Smarty let me us know if you find anything out about the RGU bars if ya can. I am hoping to swing by the dealer tomorrow to check em out. I've got no intentions of getting rid of my '15, I just need a comfortable set of bars. I've been in contact with Khrome Werks, but they told me that it is a hit & miss on whether or not their 1.25" bars work with the hydraulic clutch set up. I really would like to stay with 1.25" bars.
Okay, I did find out from a fine gent on another forum that the p/n for the 2016 bars is 55800327. He does not know if they are pinned or not, but since he works at a dealership he said he would find out. He is a tall dude, like 6'4" & he said the bars are comfortable to him. I'll post any more info I get.
Well I went to the dealership today & me & one of the parts guys got some measurements off of the 2016 RGU bars. Keep in mind these are approximate measurements:
The rise is roughly 12", base width & overall width is the same as RG bars, & pullback is roughly 9 to 9.5". The grip angle is roughly the same as the RG bars. The heighth to me is great, but still a little too much pullback. Just like the parts guy said, it probably wouldnt even be worth changing to these due to the pullback. He did tell me that they have been installing aftermarket bars on the '15 RG's & they've found that the highest you can go without wire extensions is 13" rise.
The parts guy I saw today measured the bars on a 16 RGU and a 15 CVO RGU. The CVO bars matched the specs in the catalog for the Tall Boy RG bars. The RGU bars were a few inches more narrow and I think a bit shorter than the Tall Boy.
Stopped by my dealer yesterday on the way out of town, sat on a '16 RGU. The bars 'feel' about 2 inches taller, but everything else seems the same. I would say I'm in the same boat as you chief, if it were not for the extreme pullback, those might be a good option. I'm looking for straighter wrist angles as well.
Check out the Road6 Customs bars. I've heard of them but never really looked at them until yesterday. They are making 3 different styles for the new RG's. I'm digging the standard apes, which come in 11", 13", &15". (They'll make them taller if you want) They have a 6.5" pullback. Knowing now that 13" is the tallest I can go without changing wires/hoses, I'm thinking a set of those might work if I rotate them back towards me a bit. Turns out they are right down the road from me about 75 miles away too.
I've looked at their bars also, they look pretty nice. And not too pricy either. They are on my 'short list' along with the Wild1 Chubby's Outlawz (610/612). I want to go satin black to match the hand controls, which the Wild1s are available that way. The Road6 I could order raw and have coated, but that negates any savings. The negative of the Wild1 bars is having to replace the handlebar clamp, which will be a little more invasive and also add cost. I'm still on the fence as you can tell...
I forgot to add that I emailed Road 6 Customs & am hoping for a response tomorrow. I was wondering if they had any '15 RG's in the shop with their bars on them so I could see how they feel & fit. I've got a week of vacation time coming up so if the weather is good, I might take a ride out to their shop. I've spent the last few hours online researching bars, and I keep coming back to theirs and the Wild 1's 12.5" mini apes. (wo502 I think). I have a set of 14" Wild 1's on my Evo Fatboy, and they are nice bars. If the stock wires/hoses reach with the Wild 1's, I might go with them. They really are a nice product, but a little wide.
I havent received a response from Road 6 yet, but Wild 1's did respond regarding the wo502's. Tbey said that stock wiring & hoses work just fine with those bars. Only downfall is that I'd have to purchase a diffrent clamp system to make it work.
Lil Chief
