What was interesting is that once the 12v outlet was tightened, the plug cap no longer keeps falling out. So, Macabra, see if you can tighten your lighter and I bet the cap will no longer always fall out.
I noticed when I removed mine (replaced with a USB port) there is a "outer shell" that just screws on the back. Just remove the outer fairing and you can tighten it back up.
It's a common plug, if the unit is loose you HAVE to get to the back of it to pony down on the whatever it's called nut.
If your lighter keeps falling out...you can carefully bend out the prongs, loop of dental floss (and being a Biker, likely don't have any) one of those Bloody Mary swords will work.
UPDATE - Screwed back tight and now the plastic cap seems to stay in place and not fall out. So, anyone that has an issue with the plastic cap not staying on the outlet, put something in the outlet and see if it is loose. Tightening may do the trick.
Meanwhile, rear seat and chopped tour pak back on bike ready for long trip this week with the new, 2-way, satellite communicator mounted on the handlebars.
Anyone tell me why a cigar/cigarette lighter will not work in the 12v outlet?
My plastic cap is always falling out so I thought... Why don't I put a cigar lighter (I smoke Cigars) in it's place
that way no need to hunt for a lighter. I went to my local auto parts store and purchased a new cigar lighter and no joy!
Harley at one time use to include a cigar/cigarette lighter in their 12v outlets (one came with my 2012 FLTRX).. I beleive the issue u have with the store bought one stems from the way Harley has theirs wired... U could probably find a Harley OEM 12v lighter on eBay or even from a dealer...
Your socket may appear tight, but is most likely loose. Tighten it to keep the plug in place. Or, I know H-D sells an actual cigarette lighter socket to put in place of the 12V outlet in fairing. Price is $30 and will look like a factory install as it is made to fit the space.
Part #69200605
I picked one up from Canadian tire store and it has worked great in there for 7 yrs. I replaced the original Harley one when it got lost on a trip.
