Volt meter reading

I'll admit to not paying a ton of attention to my dash voltage meter in the past, but I seem to think it was around 13 volts while under way.
I just completed turning very light on the scoot into LED (headlights, turn signals, brake, accent, etc.) and now the gauge shows closer to 15 volts while running. I am using a load equalizer. Anyone have a similar experience?

The HD VM isn't known for it's accuracy, use a regular VOM to get a true reading. Also the LEDs don't put as much load on your system,so the reading may be a little higher .

Volt meter reading

Use a multimeter. It's very common to see 14 to 15 volts while charging.

I was riding a couple of days ago after my LED headlight install and noticed my voltage gauge seemed to be higher too. Thought it just must be in my head, but maybe not after reading you post. Hope it will be OK.

As stated above, the in-dash VM gives approximate readings at best. Just the position of your head while looking at it will make a difference. Years ago I made up a little longer voltmeter wiring setup to connect to the battery posts and the VM held in my pocket. Anytime I really need to check charging volts, I attach one end of VM wiring to the + and - terminals of the battery, plug the other end into the VM in a jacket or shirt pocket, take a ride and check it.

As everyone has stated check with a digital Multimeter, 15 volts is a little too high normal charging rates for bike batteries is 13.8 to 14 volts max, any higher usually results in a cooked battery.

My lighting is mostly stock and the voltage reads 14 volts while riding, slightly lower at idle. Like mentioned before the HD volt meter is not the most accurate but it will still give you a heads up if something is going wrong with your charging system

erratic mostly reads 0

My Voltmeter may have given up. It usually reads 0 and occasionally wakes up and reads 13 + or -
Checked the connectors at the gauage, no difference, been doing this for months. So obviously bike is charging.

+1 on using a volt meter.
Mine reads 15.5 volts!! Tested voltage on the back of the gauge and voltage was 14.0.
In my head 15.5 = 14, just don't tell that to my 2nd grade math teacher!

Voltage Regulator caps the voltage to 14.4V regardless of load. The 45amp stator puts out AC voltage of about 20-25Volts per 1000RPM. So even at idle you should register the 14.4V (approximate gauge reading could be different of course). So I'd guess if you're seeing differences at the gauge it's most likely a gauge anomaly.

Changing the lights out with lower amp draw bulbs should make no noticeable difference in the voltage at the battery or the gauge. If you had an AMP meter you might see the difference.
