SE 585 cams

I haven't done any research on the HD SE 585 cams but IMO I wouldn't spend the money on any HD cam.
HD has to comply with the EPA requirements and that has an effect on the performance of the HD SE cams.
If you are looking at a cam mod it is best to go aftermarket.

I don't disagree that going after market would be a better choice but I don't think that all HD cams meet EPA standards at all. If that were the case they wouldn't have put the 259E cams in the 120 to make it compliant. They could have just stuck with the 120R with the 266 cams and been done with it.

A lot of HD "For Race Application Only" parts are used in street bikes and HD put this label on most of their performance parts just to screw the customer out of the warranty. My 2008 came with a 96" engine but the 103 stage 2 kit with SE 255 cams I put in the bike was labeled "For Race Application Only" even though this same engine was available in the 2011 models except for the SE255 cam. That means that the SE 255 cam is a "race only" cam according to HD.
HD and the EPA knows that most of HD the bikes are going to have performance upgrades done by their owners and that is why the HD cam grinds are as EPA compliant as possible.
The way HD complies with the EPA regulations on most of their cams is in the intake/exhaust overlap, HD cams have less overlap than the aftermarket cams do and that is one of the reasons the aftermarket cams are a better option then the HD cams.

It does have a lot of torque, and it pulls really good all the way through the rpm range. I like it.

I had them put in my 15 RGS along with the SE heavy springs. Aside from the nice sound they make ;-) The torque and responsiveness is amazing. I rode it for a few hundred miles before swapping them out and at 3,000 RPM with a twist of the throttle, it'll throw you back in the seat. In 6th gear I can easily crank it get 10 mph gain in a couple of seconds. No need to down shift when passing someone. It's worth the $150 price tag and 2 hours of labor IMO. I put in the springs just because I was having the rocker box covers replaced with blacked out ones. It made it easier to put in the adjustable lift rods (which you need with the 585).

I'm wondering what the SE585 cam would do in the 120ST...? >:)

120ST 20% off thru my stealer... with a TB. Tune, Dragula 2's, and heavy breather intake, makes all the power I need.

I had a stage IV race kit installed with the SE 585 cams 2 weeks ago and it runs strong. Since I never did anything like this before I can't compare it to much. Another week or 2 and I'll get the oil changed and they'll put it on the dyno. It runs like a scaled assed ape compared to before and it sounds a whole lot better. I had previously had the dealer add the V&H power duals, Magnflow slip ons, AC, and super tuner.

I got these numbers from another board:
SE 585: 234/240 .585/.585 int. 18/36 ex. 47/13 99/107 103 LSA

I like the continuity of keeping info in the thread no matter how old. Kinda like NOT starting a new Dixxon thread everytime they offer something new. Or the cool factor of contributing to the "What did you do to your Road Glide" thread.
It's like a historical archive.

IMO, creating a new thread each time really doesn't improve the signal / noise ratio anyways.

Seems a potential "no-win" situation - Create new and be reminded that there are tons of threads on the subject or add to an older thread.

Or maybe it's really about numbers. Does the creation of new threads equate to some measure of goodness or supposed participation. I dunno.
I wonder if someone gets a merit badge for "the biggest number of threads opened in February since inception.

I agree. I just find it interesting, like in this situation, when the poster quotes and disagrees to someone that posted 7 years prior, lol.….. Makes ya almost wanna let them know not to expect a response from Mr. Bikejockey…… On that note, like someone posted on another thread here the other day, I do find it interesting looking at these old threads, how many people that at one time were super active, are now ghosts……..

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
