Or is it just a pipe dream?
Can I have a bike that is capable of a 10 sec 1/4 mi But is a JOY to
ride on the street and a Great long distance touring bike.
A bike that is nearly bullet proof one that will go 60kmi or more
without and engine / trans problems.
So is it doable?
Anything is doable with the right amount of $$ thrown at it - A tuned ZX-14 with a Different Seat, Bars, Rear Sets, Windshield and a set of Givi or Beatle Bags and you are pretty damn close
Had one in 09 fun bike but the wife didn't like it so had to do all my road trips solo.
It probably wasn't that fast but fast enough. If My RGS was that fast I would be grinning from ear to ear.
Somebody will probably try to claim a Hayabusa would make a great touring bike, but most here would argue that point.
The V65 Honda from the early 80's would run well into the 10s, and was pretty decent on the highway, for awhile, but certainly wasn't a touring machine in any way shape or form.
I had an '89 GSX1100F that would do low 11s bone stock. They were capable of low 10s with not too much modding. These bikes were considered sport touring with a longer frame, adjustable windshield, and lots of touring accessories like bags, seats, etc.
Find yourself a Honda Valkyrie to begin with....
Plenty of power / muscle / comfort / durability there....
'Bone stock' these were running @96/96....
Only mods I did to mine was add a set of custom glasspac
exhausts and lift the fuel tank a half inch to allow more
air to enter the breather.
Add a blower and you will have what you are looking for !!
The wife and I did quite a bit of touring on a 1st gen Yamaha FZ1. It was a great all around bike that could easily be put into the 10s. The wife was so comfy on the back she had a habit of falling asleep. Other riders "goosing" her when she dozed off became a game.
OR 3, if your significant other is forgiving.
I've actually got 4 in the garage right now. Took in a "rescue" a couple weeks ago, that needs some love. Tracking down minor electrical issues, clutch and cosmetics, then replacing some gaskets. Gotta keep that old iron on the road.
A warmed-up S&S 143" should certainly push you into the 10's.
As far as 60,000 miles, that is yet to be seen in those.(many stock engines do not make it that far).
Scott
If I were looking for that kind of power but yet keep it ridable for cross country trips I would probably look at the Aero Charger turbo kit. It's used in conjunction with a low compression medium lift cam and can turn a bagger into a beast. Yet when ridden correctly can get in the 40 plus mpg on the highway.
Someone already mentioned the Vrod. I had a Vrod muscle from 2011 to last October before I traded it in for my '16 RGU. The Vrod was my everything bike. I put on a set of risers to change the seating position to be more upright, an extended Rifle shield and a pair of lower wind deflectors. With Stage I parts and a tuner, I could hit high 10's for a quarter mile. I put on just over 64,000 miles in the time I had the bike. The only engine issue was that I had to replace the rear breather hose after 3 years. Common issue with the Vrod and less than $10 to replace. Everything else was normal maintenance: oil changes, spark plug replacement, etc.
I toured from coast-to-coast and from sea level to the top of Mt. Evans (the highest paved road in North America), and many places in between. The saddlebags on the Muscle are almost as big as on the touring bikes. With a Bikers Friend bag strapped to the back, it was easy to travel for multiple week trips.
I find it funny how Harley continues to advertise that some new Rushmore bike is the fastest from x to y that Harley has ever produced. They seem to forget the Vrods when they make these statements. While my RGU is quicker than previous generation touring bikes, it isn't faster or quicker than my Vrod.
I'd still have the bike but my wife wants to ride more often with me as we get older, so I upgraded for her comfort.
Not everyone's bag of tea, I get that, but for the OP's original question, yes, it can be done, and on a Harley.
My 2012 fltrx with a 107 ran pretty easy 12 teens and got 40 plus mpg and was very comfortable to ride and never a worry even 2 up. I have just installed a 117 and have not had it to dragstrip yet (will soon) but did check milage at 40 2 up and 45 with just me not beating on it. Hopeing for mid elevens we will see. But it is very noticeably faster and gained nearly 10 mph in 1/4 on my test site:wink:.A eleven second bagger or even 12 for that matter is pretty respectable.
I've got 3, and I know I'm at least one bike short.
- FLTRU for my long-distance rides
- FXSTB as my badass bar bike
- KLR for commuting and getting dirty
But a V-Strom would make for a better commuter, and then I could go with a DRZ for getting dirty. And man oh man I want a '98 ZX-7R like Doug Chandler rode. And then there's the KTM Super Adventure and the Triumph Thruxton I keep looking at.......
Oh ain't it the truth.......I have had quite a season of moving bikes already and its only June - I am set with the (2) I have and really don't need to look any further but damned if there is not a part of me that wants to go old school 70's Custom Chopper with a Funky Rake and a Custom Seat that goes all the way up the bitch bar.......Casket Tank and Narrow ass Apes............and have the whole thing be a rat rod.........sans chrome
I know its not everyones brand of Vodka but growing up in Central Cali and seeing the Norcal Bike scene (as a family, we always went N, my Dad was not a fan of S....sorry S Guys) of the 70's and having a 1% on our street......these to me where the bad ass bikes to have
Sorry OP, I just slipped back to my childhood and started typing.
These numbers assume:
820lbs bike weight with full tank of gas.
200lbs rider weight.
----------------------------
1120lbs total weight
So... to get that launched down the track will require:
276.5hp to hit a 9.000 quarter mile @ 151.442mph
201.2hp to hit a 10.000 quarter mile @ 136.215mph
151.45hp to hit an 11.000 quarter mile @123.910mph
116.66hp to hit a 12.000 quarter mile @ 113.568mph
Now as for how long the engine will last tweaked up that hard, depends on how often and how carefully - or not- it is pushed to the limits.
