I'm guessing it's time to reseal my rear rock box cover...
Would it be worth it to pull both and replace gaskets or should I leave the front alone? If I pull both I'm thinking about powder coating them. Should I leave well enough alone and just fix what's currently broken? Lastly, are there any other worthwhile upgrades to undertake while the rocker box covers are pulled?
Decisions decisions! Just pull em both off, have them powder coated and replace both gaskets. As far as what else you should do, I'll let the professional wrenches chime in on that.
Do what you want to do but you only need to pull one rocker box to do the repair. The R&R of the rocker box gasket is only a hour or two job if you take your time, waiting until next fall or winter to do the powder coat isn't a big deal.
If you pull both covers for powder coat you could also install Rockouts or Rocker lockers in your rocker plate while it is apart. For $15 you can't beat the price and it's an easy install. Just watch out for the O ring under the plate. They do help with some of the noise in the valve train.
Well, so far I have done some research about pulling the tank, replacing the gasket and the proper way to torque the rocker box cover back down. I've decided to try tightening the bolts a smidge, cleaning off the oil residue and seeing if that clears it up. If not I'll go pick up a gasket and a dog bone adapter and swap out the gasket. I'll likely be doing cams later in the year so I'll tackle the rocker locker upgrade then. Great idea btw! I'd like to make this a quick job so I don't waste any good weather with the top end torn apart. I'll report back how everything goes. Thanks to everyone for the advice!
Mine was leaking after I came back from a 4 day 1200 mile trip. A bead of Anerobic gasket maker, gasket, another bead then install top rocker box. Let it sit over night and its good to go.
When I had it apart I put the rocker box on a flat surface and it was warped slightly. Sent know if this is the norm or not

I'll check to see if mine's warped. If I'm not mistaken, using gasket maker is not the norm. I hope my cover is flat and a gasket alone seals it up. The plan is to have it buttoned up and on the road by lunch. Waiting for rtv to dry would put a damper on my Friday plans.
Don't know if its the norm or not. I have a Drago 2 going on next week and a retune. I did not want to take a chance with oil on a brand new black pipe.
Could too much crank case pressure be causing this? I had some pressure release when I checked the oil the other day during a ride. I don't recall it doing that before I cleaned and oiled my ventilator filter. Could I have jacked up the crank case vent somehow?
You shouldn't hear a pressure release when you remove the dipstick. The air filter has nothing to do with pressure build up. I would suggest checking the butterfly valves in the top of the cylinder heads for malfunction.
Update: I snugged the cover bolts a bit and rode 50-60 miles. Leak seems to have stopped. I'll keep an eye on it and replace the gasket if it becomes an issue again.
Rode ~500 miles this weekend with a good mix of backroads and highway. The leak seems to have stopped and no pressure release when I checked at multiple stops. Not sure if it was a freak thing or what.
