Opinions/ Perceptions

Plain and simple. One of my goals in life is to ride in all 50 states. I have maybe the hardest to get, Hawaii. When I was 17 and enlisted in the AF, I got orders to Bellows AFS in Waimanalo. Uncle Sugar would ship one POV from Oakland Army Terminal to Pearl Harbor but I had to get it there. I rode my new 1980 Yamaha 650 Special to Oakland and picked up at Pearl a month later (slow boat I guess, or maybe because I was an E-1).

That bike was my only mode of transportation the first year I was there. I didn't ride it all the way, but I got as close as possible.

Alaska is the only one remaining on my list. To get there I have to cross Canada. But with 2 DWI's on my record, I can't drive there much less even ENTER!

So- what's the perception of someone that rents a bike and rides in a state. Is it cheating? I sure want to color that state in but I know of no other way to do it other than flying there and renting.

Thoughts?

No, it's not cheating. I also count Hawaii, ridden 2 islands on rentals.

You can't enter Canada with a DUI prior??? We rode Canada a couple of years ago, and I was surprised how easy it was to cross the border. Couple questions about weapons, checked our passports, and off we went. Wasn't more than 30 seconds...

I hate that motorcycle they make me ride. I'm here to tell you there ain't nothing in the world I hate worse than that elephant under my ass.

How is it cheating? You still have ridden there, maybe not the way you intended but you still rode there.

Man, it's a crapshoot. I've done research on it for the last few years. Guess it depends on the checkpoint/ point of entry.

I did an Ironbutt border to border ride in 2007, before the passport laws (and drug wars) went into effect. Started in El Paso, dipped into Juarez and turned north. Entered Canada at a tiny checkpoint north of Ambrose, ND. Long story, but I befriended an Ambrose (population 22) resident in advance, who knew the Canadian border guard. Sent up 20 lbs of Texas BBQ and they ended up doing a story on me in the Crosby ND newspaper. lol I only rode 100 or so feet into Canada and turned around. Below are pics of me at the checkpoint messing with the Canadian Customs dude after my "trip" into Canada. The second is at the end of The Lost Trail, the famed Texas Longhorn Chisolm cattle drive Trail. The second pic shows the border station in the background. Just above the pack on my bike the official border marker is visible in front of the hedges.

A buddy of mine was not allowed in at Toronto because of a DWI. I'm not willing to chance getting turned back, or worse, caught deep inside Canada and being detained.

And for the record, I've been sober now almost 14 years. Freedom is more important to me than drinking. I can't ever get caught again...

If taking a boat to Hawaii isn't cheating than taking a plane to Alaska isn't cheating either. Go for it. Color that sumbitch!

It's about RIDING a bike there. not owning the bike that is ridden there. IMO

Damn, you're one state ahead of me, so of course I'd think less of you if you "cheated." Now if you let me knock off Hawaii and Alaska first, then it's a different story.

What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it's all about?

Not cheating in my eyes, I have rented bikes twice in Honolulu and I count it.
