Other than looks, what qualities should I consider before buying passenger floorboards? Are there any styles/brands universally known to suck?
Bought my first Harley and now I'm broke, so can't afford to make firstt-timer mistakes.
Thanks.

buy what fits your budget, personality and vision for what you Bike will look like in the future.. For me the first place I would look is Kuryakyn.

Good luck, welcome from Eastern NC!!

First off, since you didn't say what kind of shark you're riding, are you looking to replace footpegs with floorboards, or are you looking to swap your existing floorboards for something different? If it's the latter, keep in mind that you can just get inserts that will replace the stock HD rubber instead of replacing the entire thing (this is handy if you're on a budget).

With that being said...
Probably the most important thing for passenger floorboards I would say is: will it support your passenger's entire foot (or at least most of it)? Keep in mind passenger floorboards are typically about 1/2 - 3/4 the size of the driver's. Since MOST passengers are probably going to either be women or children, this shouldn't be too much of an issue, but considering I was wearing size 13 shoes at about 12 years old, it could be an issue for some.

Another thing to consider: how far out from the bike will they stick (even when folded up)? This can affect how easy it is to walk/back up your bike.

Other than that, since they don't really affect performance, the only real concern is aesthetics... does it look good to you? Personally, I would start by looking at the bigger names in the aftermarket accessories first (e.g., Kuryakyn, Arlen Ness, Performance Machine, Show Chrome, etc). If, however, you don't see anything that catches your eye, start looking at some of the other brands.

Good luck, welcome from West Michigan, and congrats on the new ride!

The height of your riding partner is important as well. My wife is short so she didn't like the fact the the bottom of her legs sat on top of the front of the saddlebags. I remedied this with a set of extended height floorboard mounts. There are adjustable floor boards that would do the same thing as well.

I got my wife a set of the HD adjustable pegs to augment her stock boards. Gives her a couple of additional foot position options. She loves them.

I have a set of stock (black) passenger footboards, stock (black) mounting brackets, and 1" Soos extenders laying around in my garage. I'm pretty sure all the hardware's there too.

Since you're a Maiden fan, call it $75 shipped to your door via USPS Priority Mail.

Up the Irons!

Sorry about that. Didn't realize the year of bike mattered and didn't specify I had a Roadglide because of the name of this site. But I'm new. Maybe non-sharks swim the waters here. So here's more info ...

I have a 2010 with passenger pegs my wife thinks are "fine." She is basing that on the less than 150-mile rides we took on a 700cc Yamaha we had so I started looking in to getting her floorboards.

Floorboards are new to me, and apparently cost as much new as a monthly payment on a bike, so I figured I would ask what is important to consider. Here's a pic of what I have now.

Appreciate the feedback and keep it coming.

With some items, the year does matter (probably not with floorboards, but you never know), and it was more a a question of what type of RG you ride (i.e., Regular, Special, Ultra, CVO) since the Ultra and CVO come with passenger floorboards while the others come with pegs. Hope I didn't offend or anything.
And yes, non-shark riders do swim these waters... I was one for a couple months before I bought my RGU late last year.

I have the same style (streamliner) on my bike and bought a set of passenger boards from a fellow member. You may want to keep an eye on the forum classifieds or post a wanted to buy thread. May get lucky. A bonus with passenger boards is you can move the passenger pegs to your highway pegs position to complete the look. Good luck.

My wife really likes these:
Adjustable Passenger Pegs | Passenger Pegs: Fixed & Adjustable | Pegs & Foot Controls | Kuryakyn
Be aware that they mount to the OEM passenger floorboard brackets so you'd have to have
a set of those also, but I would think you can pick those up cheap on Ebay or just ask in the classifieds here.

When we test rode our 15 CVO, the wife's only request was that we swap the floorboards off our
'11 Ultra, which included the above pegs. The combination works well to give her a variety of foot positioning.

Passenger comfort is of the utmost importance to a happy life on the road...............

I am looking at getting a set of passenger boards as well. Great info shared above. I would like to add a suggestion if the style suits you, check out JH Choppers. I think the shape of their boards are pretty cool, but wondering about backing the bike up as mentioned above. I hit the stock passenger pegs backing up from time to time now as it is...Budget wise OEM board set may be best, as they will match your rider boards.

That might be a good question to ask your wife. You mentioned she thought the pegs were "fine", was that really a fine, or a sarcastic fine? My wife has floorboards on her bike, but on the rare occasion she rides as a passenger on mine, she much prefers pegs over floorboards.

I bought the old lady floorboards on my last scoot. Didn't think of swapping them out when I traded it I never on the 15 RGS. Asked her after our last ~700 mile weekend and she'd rather have boards again. An associate has adjustable ones but they were on when he got his scoot. The search continues...

when my wife started riding. After the second ride, she said she wanted a floorboard over the peg. I bought a black floorboard from a forum member and didn't want to spend a fortune... as I knew I was looking to upgrade my boards and wanted them to eventually match. She's happy now.
