Been thinking about doing lowers for quite some time now but not a huge fan of the looks. The main reason i would get a set would be to try and cut down on this wind rushing up from around the tank. My question is just how much do they reduce the wind and buffeting?
I've put factory lowers on my last three bikes. I'll never have another bike without lowers. The difference, especially on long trips, is well worth the cost. Nothing else does a better job at smoothing out the buffeting.
Ever tried the soft ones? Don't really have the moo-laa to dump in OE lowers. Also looked at the matazu on ebay for less than 200 with quick detach hardware
The soft ones are like an air dam. And they tend to let your engine heat up.
My wife has a set of Matazu lowers on her RG. Chances are after you put them on, you won't be taking them back off. Before you put them on, go out on the highway at your normal speed. Lift your feet off of the footboards, and feel the wind push your legs back. Then after you put on a set of hard lowers, do the same thing. You will have an aha moment
Might check Craigslist for them too, I scored a set from an '09 that I trimmed to fit the fairing supports. Picked them up for $150. They are matte silver, and my bike is black, but I'll have them painted eventually
Already have GADS triple tree and harley mud flaps on engine guard. Noticed little to no change with either product when it comes to turbulent air hitting my body/head. That's main reason I started this thread asking about lowers. Don't wanna spend more money for small results. But it appears like everyone loves their lowers
I had lowers and a 14" LRS on my 09. Worked great. I had the crash bar deflectors too, but removed them. Didn't seem to do anything.
I have lowers and a 13" Freedom on my 15. Love them.
I plan on adding lowers in the near future as well, especially for more speakers, but I've recently talked to a buddy who put them on and started that in his opinion they make the bike run way hotter. Any other comments on the heat issue with lowers?
I ride many days in the 90's and 100's and adding heat would suck.
Thanks,
Your buddy is full of it. It's been documented that lowers actually channel air over the jugs, and cool the engine better than no lowers. Think about this.... the Ultra comes with lowers. Why would they put them on if it was hurting the engine?
Highway pegs help. I opened the vents on my Rushmore style lowers for the first time since last fall. They flow lots of air. That said, 3 days of 90 degrees is considered a heat wave here.
As previously stated lowers make a huge difference in reducing wind buffeting. I installed the Matazu vented units on mine and later removed the adjustable door. This allows for more air to the engine but still provides the much needed protection.
Doe's anyone know if the Matazu come color matched? looks like on-line they have two colors "black" and "black". I also do not see any for anything newer than 2013? Might just be it has been that long since they have updated their web site, would not think there is a difference as far as fit from a 13 to a 16 but don't know?

Can the non road glide factory lowers be easily modified to fit a 2015 Road Glide? I thought I read that a small portion needs to be cut off for the fairing mount if I remember correctly. I see quite a few used sets for sale but aren't road glide specific model.
The RG specific lowers were for I think 09 and older. In 10 or maybe 11 the changed the fairing mount on the RG and also shortened the tab on the lower cap that covers the engine guard. So no more RG specific lowers. I think some of the aftermarket lowers still come with the longer tab that can just be trimmed to make them fit. Not a big deal from what I have heard.
I got some cheap ones for $68 on Ebay. They may not be perfect but, I am very happy with them. The hardware for the top was included. For the bottom, I just used an aluminum strap I made and a stainless bolt, washer, and nut.
I bought a set like this and am totally happy with them. Material is as thick as HD and I put speaker pods on them. They're for sale at other sources with speaker pods already now. They weren't available with speaker pods when I bought them though.
Love my lowers.. Wind buffeting is a lot better and living in WV, I closed them in the mornings going to work and open them on way home when it warms up...
