Not a bunch of crap. These tuners have been illegal on road-goon motorcycles for years, and we all knew that. This has nothing to do with "freedom" or the BS government. It has everything to do with the government finally getting around to enforcing the law.

I wonder how many of y'all are old enough to remember the brown air that hung over most cities in this country in the '70s. Say what you like about the EPA (created by a Republican), but I'd rather not breathe air I can see, and if that means I ride a stock bike, so be it.

It has more to do with legal responsibility. Harley can't pretend they are selling a product with a certain approved level of emission then turn around and sell a way to get around it. If an aftermarket company is selling it as a non street legal mod then it is on the consumer to take responsibility. That is where the real nightmare lies. Now Harley can deny your warranty claim because you have an illegal modification. What you really have to watch is can the insurance companies deny claims because you now have a motorcycle that isn't street legal.

We all play along with Harley and their horribly inefficient engines because we want displacement and noise over efficiency and a clean engine. The opposite of compromise is a frustrating mess.

05Train is so correct. I live in a valley and when I was younger "many, many years ago" I remember stage smog alerts and a plume of dark "SMOG" blanketing my town. Now it is gone. Do we all like the EPA and its affect on us? not always but, I do love the results and will deal with it because the price we pay is so worth the results.

Those of us that have messed with ECU controlled cars have dealt with this for a long time. My last Camaro was 2001, it was a drag car that I sometimes drove on the street. It had not cats, a huge cam, big converter and a host of other mods....it also would pass Illinois emissions testing (they only do an OBDII plug in scan for codes here. No codes and you pass). I used a program called HP Tuners on my laptop to defeat all the codes and do all the tuning. GM di not support this kind of thing but the aftermarket does and that will be where we are headed with H-D. There will be a time that we just plug in a laptop and do the tune that way (hell it might be here already but I don't car to mod my RG, except for pipes and a breather).

Too bad in the big picture we are not the worst offenders, not by a long shot. Remember China had to shut down for weeks before the Olympics just so the air would be tolerable? That air doesn't stay over China. All the wildfires are producing more pollution than all our bikes combined. Then there is the occasional volcanic eruption. I'm not saying it should be anything goes but I think there are bigger air quality problems. Why can a large corporation buy carbon credits so they can pollute. Where are our carbon credits?

Just a thought

Have you seen some of the pics of RIO floating around the last couple weeks??

So Train, What kind of tuner are you running?

I run a PV. I also run the vast majority of my map in closed loop - what many people refer to as "too lean". My Stage 1 bike broke 120mph last weekend.

Wow, way to deflect. I'am guessing you didn't even click on the link. It's NOT a "what if" and it's not about "getting caught", its in process and coming. 55 mpg is already mandated. So are electric vehicles. You can choose to ignore it and claim "It'll never happen" but it's real and it IS happening. Here, here's another link for you to ignore.

California Regulator Mary Nichols May Transform the Auto Industry - Bloomberg
I'm not deflecting anything. But did you see the word "may" in that title? These are scare tactics, and I refuse to be scared.

Riding ain't a right, it's a privilege. We have a democratically elected government which is charged with passing laws. You don't like the laws that are passed? You have every right to petition that government and/or work to vote them out.

And I don't worry about the fruity stuff from California. The CARB goals have been modified so many times that I don't pay attention anymore. The 55mpg mandate is a feel-good thing; it won't happen anytime soon.

I have fond memories of the 70's. After all, it was carbs, points, and plugs and $hit I knew how to work on. No EFI tuners, and EPA was in its infancy, not the monster it's turned into today. Have to respectfully disagree with your summation that this has nothing to do with government or freedom, and only because they're just now getting around to enforcing the law. On the contrary, government has everything to do with this (EPA), and if found that Harley is supporting conservative causes, then you can bet it has something to do with it. And who do you think pays for the R&D whenever the EPA comes up with more and more emissions restrictions and laws? EPA, like most alphabet govt agencies are off the chain, and not in a good way. Sue, settle, next! Depending what side of the fence one is on, they might think that's great, until one day they're knocking on your door. In a way, they are at your door, and mine, and while you're okay with it, me, not so much. Lastly, the EPA saw its beginnings through a bill introduced by a Democrat, and it was a Democrat controlled Congress when finally signed into law (and not because he liked it) by Nixon. Anyway, got no beef with you or anyone else. The topic just hit a nerve. Hope I don't regret buying that Screamin' Eagle Pro Super Tuner. Don't see much in the way of support or info on the net for the SESPT, whereas I see Fuelmoto and their awesome support with Power Vision on just about every forum. Train, if I bought a Power Vision, and since you have one, would ya still help me out?
Of course I would. I'm a dick, but I'm a helpful dick.

I do not disagree with your statement but the fine was 12 mil plus 3 mil for money to research alternative fuel for wood burning stoves.Really
I live in the midwest our ride season is maybe 6 months.See where I am going with this.
Electric ,hybrid, cars wonderful. Now that gas is cheap lets raise the gas tax.And you alternative fuel drivers you get a milage tax for doing the right thing
My neighborhood area has three postal offices between two zip codes there is no less than 125 mail delivery trucks between them running 5 days
52 weeks per year. I refer back to our mid west ride season. Pollution ?
Every postal vehicle minus over the road in North America should at least be hybrid. How about lead by example.
If I was the motor co. I would have negotiated a SERT owner user tax for environmental impact. A 100.00 per year per bike fee
bikers would bitch and complain, but we would pay.
The EPA would look like the concerned govt. bureau that want greenies to believe they are.It would be a democratic grand slam
lets see 300,000 tuners x 100. every year, forget it 12 mil is a bargain
Ride safe

I see this BS from EPA and state environmental agencies all the time. The show up with a crap load of lawyers and trumped-up list of BS charges so that companies have no choice but to make the business decision that it's cheaper to do what the EPA wants than spend money fighting them and risk losing and paying the fine on top of the cost of the fight.

EPA and companies both know, the EPA's pockets are a whole lot deeper than the stockholders', especially when they're shoving bill up the taxpayers' ......

How long before they go after Power vision. I have mine installed on the 2016 but have found no reason to tune it yet.
Use it just for the other things it can do.
Still I bet no madder what they do someone will come up with a work around. It may not be cheap or easy but they will find away. Heck they may just offer a bolt on ECM to replace the factory one. You can get them now for custom builds.
Look how long VW got away with just a simple program that lied to the test equipment.

not every bike has a tuner, and for those that do, contribute very little to air quality problems.
Agreed. Here in Florida, older trucks and cars are crazy offenders. We have no emissions inspections and most spew a foul smelling effluent, some clearly visible. We call them fumigators. Cops drive right behind and around them all the time with no action. In a cage, when you see an older perv van, pick up truck, or huge piped Honda Civic or Subaru in front of you on an entrance ramp, highway, or backroad, it's common practice and even instinct to flick on the recirculate button. We bikers are a very small piece of the carbon footprint and an easy target. Bob, who believes a cooler running bike contributes less to global warming.

Yes

It doesn't matter whether it's a Power Vision, Master Tuner, etc anything that changes the fuel maps will eventually be illegal to sell unless it meets CARB requirements. This is because they termed them all as "Defeat devices." It doesn't matter if your intent is to improve performance within their specifications but your intent to change them at all. Since they aren't going to test every bike the easiest thing to do is ban them.
