My fellow coworkers new 2017 ultra classic down with oil pump (?) oiling system problems at 5800 miles. He rides everyday. and they have given him a 103 loaner bike for now. Anybody else having issues?
I havent heard of any other issues, this happens a lot in automotive your always going to have some degree of part failure.. let us know what they tell him failed so we can keep track.
What I find amazing is that they gave him a loaner bike. I thought only the Europeans did that.
Every manufacturer is going to have some issues. You just hear about it more on the internet because guys who would most likely never post on the internet will come out of the woodwork when they have a problem.
Most of the Harley dealers are pretty good in Ga.,service is big part of their income. they surely don't want any bad stuff getting out about the 2017's. my friend rides "every" day as his main mode of commuting close to 100 miles a day to the airport here. That is a big advertisement to all the employees here that Ride.
I have heard that line before here as well. They have sloppy tolerances. Shouldn't be that way. I think each one rolls off the line different. Some don't use any and some seem to have it run out.
A brand new bike that uses oil makes no sense at all with today's technologies.
There must be some type of design problem or defective part within the new 2017 Harley M8's if they burn oil and Harley says it is OK for a new 2017 M8 to burn up to one quart of oil in 1,000 miles.
.
NO FRICKIN WAY should a brand new bike use a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I'd call the MOCO myself and if they wouldn't make it right I'd send it right back to them, thru the front window, on fire! then blame it on the oil consumption!
Oil pump and oil pressure issues are not unknown. I'm not saying they're common, they're not unknown.
The MoCo is doing everything possible to make the customer happy. I wouldn't be concerned. They've got a lot riding on this new motor, and they're not going to risk bad PR.
Given the very small number of M8's that have shipped (my guess about 60,000) these reoccurring oil pump defects are a common problem or defect. IMHO Harley has a oil pump quality problem with the M8.
Now you need to add the on-going design problem that makes Harley say that it is OK for a brand new M8 to burn one quart of oil in 1,000 miles.
Hopefully, Harley fixes both of these M8 quality problems.
.
I've got a number to call Harley direct and I am going to make that call today. I also had a Vance and Hines Power Duals along with their fuel controller and the Harley Ventilator air cleaner installed by the dealer so as to void the warranty. The dyno showed that it gained 1.25 HP over a stock motor. What I have seen is the stock motor has been coming it at just over 80HP. They didn't do a baseline on my motor so I don't know where it was at before. I was expecting an 8 or 9 HP gain. In the process of cooling down before I address this with Harley.
Interesting thread. I just got my RG home last night, still less than 100 miles. I will be watching that oil level like hawk,
That is way too much oil, my car has 240K and doesn't use a quart between oil changes. Same with my old Metric bike.
In my dealing with Harley for the first time, I was kinda surprised by the lack of knowledge about the M8, everyone had to ask someone else the most simple questions. The manager finally admitted "We are still learning about this motor, but you can be assured you will have any problems fixed if they occur"

There is not excuse for them not to know more than I know about the M8 engine. That is just pure laziness on their part. There is all kinds of information on the internet.
When I was looking to test ride the '17 Road King, the salesman said to go out front and he would pull it around. He pulls up on a Heritage softail.
Billy says: They still have my bike in the shop (day 12). They started saying that the oil pump needed replaced. Now they are saying that the motor needs replaced due to oil pump coming apart and now the motor has junk all thru it. Hopefully I will get my bike back before the warranty is over. lol
They at least gave me a loaner bike. I will let you know what the outcome is. (this was on Friday,27th) .
this is a friend Billy's bike.the dealers won't say.but the internet says a bad batch of oil pumps from the manufacture of the pump:when they installed the extra fitting for the liquid cooled bike ,they did not remove the metal shaving, and then Harley installed them on a certain batch of bikes . they are supposedly trying to locate the "batch " of bikes to repair .?.
Catfish, the dealer did a bunch of tests and found no issue. I am to bring it back after 500 miles for them to recheck the level. Very happy with the dealers efforts to resolve the issue!
BILLY, Got his bike back on Monday, new engine installed ,he rode in to work today and so far is very happy. He still says he can't believe how much better it is than the 2016 ultra 103 they loaned him (ride quality and power!). Over 12,000.00 that it cost Harley in dealer charges.
Swhartlage - You still out there? I am having same issues - curious of an update on your Oil consumption solved???
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
