Extended Warranty

Hello all. I am new to the forum, so apologies if I am asking a question previously answered. I tried the search function w/o success. I recently purchased a 2017 RGU. I thought the cost of the extended warrany was too high. However, this is obviously a new 1st year motor which gives me some pause for concern.

Any recommendations, information, or opinions presented about purchasing an After Markey warranty? -Thanks in advance!

I will probably go this route myself, this time around. While I'm reluctant about dealing with the aftermarket, I've heard good feedback about this one

well, that would be preferable, but really, hd doesn't sell an esp. they are all 3rd party insurance companies.... The most common one is CNA, but the cornerstone offering by jim palmer at boardtracker is getting a lot of good reviews as well. just make sure to compare them side by side to see which coverage is most important to you. ie, cornerstone has no deductible, but they don't offer hotel/food reimbursement either.

It isn't really an extension of the factory warranty. All H-D factory warranties are 24 months, unlimited mileage.
What you purchased is an ESP (extended service plan), an insurance policy that covers the parts/repairs specified, usually with a $50 deductible per covered repair.

The "Harley" ESP isnt from HD..its contracted..and it seems they are getting pickier as of late..the Cornerstone is what I will probably go with when I get near my 2 year mark...they are well established...good at any licensed state mech...not just HD dealers..so you're favorite Indy...$0 deductible, but no hotel room, etc..cheaper and longer terms...

Pick the "insurance policy" that you feel comfortable with...

I purchased Cornerstone United's ESP last October prior to my HD warranty expiration. Met with my HD dealer to get their details and price and spoke to their service manager about Cornerstone acceptance if I purchase and show up and use it. He knew of them, no issues, they paid by credit card over the phone for the customer's covered service. Personally, I haven't used the ESP yet.

I've had the Cornerstone policy through Boardtracker for the past two years on m 09 FLTRSE3, just expired last month & now they are not allowed to sell in Florida. It's an excellent policy as I have used it twice in the last two years. First time was lifter that was sheared & they approved the repair with S&S lifters, high flow oil pump & cam bearings. $1400 they paid out. Just before the contract went out I had lost 6th gear, needed a few parts in transmission & also new compensator. Replaced compensator with Rushmore all to the tune of $1800. I paid $800 for the policy when I bought it so it was well worth it. Just need to get a Georgia address so I can cover it again.

Extened Warranty/ESP

Thanks all,

I see I didn't ask the correct question. I should of asked about ESP. I did know that the HD ESP was a 3rd party insurance. One of my concerns is if there would be an issue at a Dealer using a different 3rd party insurance. From the responses, it appears the answer is "No"?

Best,
Wayne

Wayne,

There are some authorized shops for the HD endorsed ESP, but mostly HD dealerships..so the answer is most likely "yes"..you may have an issue with the HD backed ESP if that shop, not a HD dealer, was not already an authorized HD ESP shop....

If you need to use a different company , such as Cornerstone, at a HD Dealer, the answer is "no"...you also have the option of paying and they will re-imburse, as long as you get a pre-approval..again..look at discountesp.com and /or call out there...

Also, in regard to the FL and cornerstone..is it that you cant buy from outside of FL or that it is not allowed to be sold at all inside FL...

It's straight up gambling. You are betting that your will have issues with your bike that cost more than you paid for the warranty. I've lost that bet twice, won it once.

Also, you can't mod a M8 with anything other than HD parts and keep warranty coverage. That alone would cause me to opt out...

I always buy the extended warranty but wait till the original manufacturers warranty is just about up. The reason being am I gonna keep my bike? If you wait the starting price is $100 dollars more but that can be negotiated out if you shop around. In fact unless its changed you can add the extended warranty at anytime you want even if the original warranty has run out up to 75k miles and I believe 8 years. If you wait till the original has run out it's again another $100 dollars more, you have to have your bike inspected and it doesn't take effect for 30 days. The inspection fee can be negotiated out as well. You can buy the warranty anywhere and it's good everywhere even a lot of Indie shops!

The warranty on my 2015 is up in mid-May so discountesp.com is getting a call tomorrow. You'd think that given that level of competition the dealers would play ball more on the CNA plan but most of them won't. I like the $0 deductible with the Cornerstone plan a lot better as well.

Bought my 5 year Cornerstone insurance from Jim Palmer today. Remember, you have to get it while you are still have more than 30 days left in your OEM warranty. $1348. Sweet.

FYI Found out that Cornerstone cannot sell their ESP in Florida,California and Oregon as they have no license in those states. Being a resident of Florida my only option is to use a relatives address or pay thousands more thru a Harley dealership.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post regarding ESP. I have a follow-on question. How long has Cornerstone been offering HD ESP contracts? My remaining concern about paying for a policy that begins two years later for me is the financial solvency of the company.

-Cheers!

ESP's and Cornerstone

When I bought my first Harley (06 FLHT) I knew I was going to modify it... after buying the warranty and then getting home and really reading the contract it really didn't cover much and wouldn't cover a lot if your bike was/is modified.

Bought the Cornerstone policy about a two years ago for my 2013 RGU. Asked a lot of questions, Jim was very helpful and I believed I made an informed decision. But once again when you read the fine print, you gonna have to have a pretty significant issue for it to be worth the money. Only covered $100 for towing, $35 for a rental car (one day, maybe) and the list goes on... I canceled it also.

I'm all for piece of mind, but if after two years it hasn't happened it's probably not going too. save the money, put it somewhere don't spend it, and when your incident happens, pay for it.... JMO..... good luck to all. CSM-H

Always 2 sides to it. Have a buddy who had a failure on the road on his Ultra Classic, which had about 90k at the time. Long story short, he got a new motor. $50 deductible is all he paid. Yeah, he could have saved the $1500 he paid for the ESP... and then dug deep into his pocket to cover the rest. Mechanical failures can, and do, occur after the factory warranty expires.
