I ride a 2013 RGU and I'm looking at replacing my stock suspension with the Progressive 412 series. Almost all of my riding is 2up, and we try to make a couple long trips each year. After looking at the options I'm debating the 13 vs 12 1/2 inch options. I'd like to lower the bike a bit, but don't want to sacrifice ride much, if at all. I'm not sure if a half inch will make a noticeable difference. This will be the first bike that I've not run stock suspension on.
I have shorter shocks on my VMAX from progressive. I run the 418s. Good to stay with full travel if two up riding is what you do most of the time. They will provide an idea on what spring rate will work best if you phone them direct. If you shorten up the shocks, you have less travel, they end up stiffer and less ride quality for touring. Great for drag racing though. Just my opinion.
I have 412's with heavy duty springs on my 2013 rgu, I weigh 250 and carry some gear, on stiffest setting they're fine. Add 150 lb. girlfriend, not as good. Watch your weight limits on any shocks. By the way I have Racetech springs and gold emulators up front.
I replaced worn out air shocks with progressive 412 with HD springs on a previous touring bike. Paired them with race tech springs and gold valve emulators for a superior ride experience. I gained an inch in loaded ride height for more useable suspension travel, and better cornering clearance.
I had -1'' monotubes and 12'' 412's on my '04 rg, it was good. on my 2013 I went with stock height 412's and race tech springs and gold emulators. different frames, different ride heights, but I like the race tech better. stay with stock ride height if you can, don't give up any suspension travel.
