Painting motors and parts on a bike is no big deal and works just as good as tearing it down if not better (most times reinstalling parts will chip paint)
Just clean the hell out of it,.. and I mean gooooood. With a pressure washer, with degreasers, with scrub brushes, with putty knives,.. get that sucker spotless. Then tape off what you don't want painted, and go to town. A nice way to get your brushed fins,.. is just paint them with everything else. Once the paint is all dry, take a small sander with some 180 or 220 grit and sand the edges of your fins.
I've painted more motors in the bike,.. then I have out of the bikes. Infact most of the painting I have done on my road glide I did it with the parts still installed on the bike.
For a wounded man shall say to his assailant,
'If I live, I will kill you. If I die, You are forgiven.'
Such is the rule of honor.
