Question's about powder coating a rim

Ok so I've got a few question's about powder coating if anyone has experience or done this before. If I buy a rim that is not polished or chrom, just an aftermarked rim can I powdercoat only parts of the rim without damaging the rest. Like for example can I powdercoat the spokes and not the lip? Also could this be done on a chrome rim without damaging the chrom in the baking process???

The Key is the Powder Coater has to properly tape the rim. to Sandblast & paint. I have seen this done many times but it is a tedious process to make sure all of the correct surfaces are protected.

+1. My buddy is a powder coater and ive work in his shop to help him out a few times. It is a matter of prepping the wheel correctly. If you do plan on doing just the spokes make sure you get the wheel trued first unless its an all alloy rim. Once the powder coat is cured you wont be able to anything with the spokes without taking off the powder coat. Also depending on the amount of prep thats needed you may and probably will pay alil extra

Get the wheel polished so that it is nice and smooth first. Like said above it is all in the masking of the wheel. It is a lot of work to mask a wheel and powder coat it but it can be done quite nicely.

+1 on what everyone has said on here so far. I do alittle powder coating on the side and I have done wheels. What you are talking about doing is very much a pain in the A$$ but it looks great when it done.

Alot of prepping and proper taping before sandblasting the spokes, then cleaning off the tape residue, recleaning, and retaping with high temp tape. All those crevices around the base of the spokes really suck.

Expect to pay a few hundred a wheel to have this done. If a shop or someone is offering to do it for less than $100 to $150 I would look elsewhere cause they probably haven't done this before and don't know the lenghty process this takes for them to come out looking nice. I don't know about you, but I don't like being anyones guinea pig.

Just my 3 cents on the matter. I think you will be happy with the end result if you do get it done, its a really cool contrast compared chrome spokes with black rims that you see on the factory ones offered by HD.
