Having to replace mine and I'm thinking there has ta be a better way than a well nut ..
SOOO .. I'm thinking butterfly nuts with a soft rubber washer between it and the fairing and put a nylon locknut behind the butterfly to be sure its secured

Look into something call a clip nut. They are used on cars and aircraft. Or there are "nut plates" which are more of a perment installation

Just to try and offer some good advice here.
i just replaced my windshield and was worried about losing the nut in the fairing as many have, and to my surprise, I had no problems. i think the 2010s have a redesigned well nut, that cant fall through now. So if you are looking for new, you may ask the dealer for the 2010 style.

Just curious, several members seem concerned about wellnuts falling through into fairing. This is harmless since they are rubber and will not rattle or damage a thing. Yes you need to replace the $1.20 wellnut, that is why keeping a spare set of nuts and washers seems a must. However, I suggest the larger concern is keeping the damn windshield secure with such an outdated and questionable mounting system. I change shields and replace with new wellnuts. they always seem to loosen and require tightening periodically. Cant this motor company do any better? A hard mounting with locking screws or bolts would be well received and safer for all and more convenient to change out our shields when needed. I ride a 2010 and believe this may be the weakest
component on the bike( maybe the cats in the headpipe). Any suggestions on improvement? Thanks |

The 2010's are no different, and fall through just as easy. I went with larger diameter/thickness wellnuts from Ace Hardware. They have a bigger diameter and are one piece rather than the multi-piece like the oem.

Change the washers behind the wellnut to plastic or nylon and the well nut will not get pushed thru, Ace is the place. Doc

If you hardly ever change your shield, just permanently mount it to the outer fairing. If you have to remove the outer fairing, the shield comes with it without removal of the shield. I'll try to post some pics of mine later.
