Has anyone had to deal with the timing chain tensioners on bikes before 2007

On my 05 I replaced my tensioners at 25,000. They had some wear (50%).Installed the Harley (new!) composite and checked them at 55,000 and there was about 10% wear. Sold bike at 60,000. new ones were a hell of a lot better.

I went to gear drives at 24000 in my 04 never had to worry again. My originals were well worn at 12,000 miles I replaced them and when I checked them again at 24,000 miles they still looked like brand new but I had already got the gear drives so I installed them. had I known they were going to look new I probably would have kept the chain drive cams.

I did like jeff, changed to gear driven cams because of the potential for problems down the road.

Same as Jeff, went to gear drive at 38K. Cam tensioners fell apart when taking them out to switch to gear drive. - Mike

+1 on changing to gears. My tensioners were ok at 28K but I didn't want to have a time bomb in my lower end. I went with the Andrews 26G cams and like it just fine.
If you decide to go this route, strongly consider having it done by a pro. There are lots of DIY instructions on the web and I love to work on my bike, but this is a job that calls for the right tools and gauges. I realized this halfway through the job and hauled everything to a guy who has done hundreds of gear drive conversions. The wrench told me "thank god you didn't try to start it the way it was".

I have 2 friends with the 88, both of them changed to hydraulic at around 20k, the systems had a lot of weyar. I have a 10 and am in the process of going to gears right now, after 15k it looks great, but I want gears.

After reading about the tensioner issues I decided I was going to do something about it over the winter months. I looked at the Andrews kit (converts to later model cam plate and cams), a gear drive conversion (several choices there), and the Harley Screamin' Eagle hybrid conversion. Since I wasn't interested in a cam upgrade I decided to use the Screamin' Eagle cam plate. I bought my 2005 with very low miles and now have around 13,000 miles on it. I'm right now going back together with the project and still feel good about my decision. It will give me peace of mind as I plan on keeping the bike. The original tensioners were still in good shape when I took them out (less than 50% wear) but were beginning to pit and deteriorate.

When you say changed, did you refit the original spring loaded type or hydraulic?
