I'm not a big fan of leather. Yes it offers slightly better abrasion resistance but it's heavy and becomes incredibly heavy when caught in the rain. It takes 3 days to dry out. Black leather is hot hot hot in the summer and does nothing to make you more visible.
I would go with textile.

Ah yes, you would be talking about old school leather. The FXRG is treated to reflect heat and repel water, about 70% less than traditional and dries very quickly. You are correct about visibility but the FXRG has reflective piping.
Hey, I've ridden my YELLOW Roadie with an Aerostitch Hi Vis Darien jacket and those dorks STILL don't see me.

I bought the 2012 version of the heavy duty leather FXRG jacket, and the matching over-pants and gloves, off pcpain earlier this year. I have ridden over 8000 miles in this gear in all kinds of weather - snow, hail, torrential rain, 100 degree heat - and it is by far the best jacket I own.
Very waterproof - I rode from Edmonton AB to Vancouver BC and it poured the entire trip. I mean poured. I did not wear the removable liner and had very little leakage. Just a bit around my shoulders got through. The pants had some leakage in the crotch, but considering the conditions, I was impressed. My son was wearing a full HD rain suit on his bike, and was more wet than me.
Very warm - As mentioned have ridden in snow and hail, down into near freezing weather crossing passes without the liner and it is warm. I have ridden with and without an electric vest. The vest was only necessary after a long ride in very cold conditions. It doesn't have a high collar so neck protection is required.
Armour is excellent - I did purchase the back protector from HD and it is made to fit in the included pouch. A good investment as it turned out as I'll explain below.
Very comfortable - I am 5'10", 200lbs, 45" chest and long arms and I bought the L. The XL was just a bit too wide for me. With the liner this jacket is a little too tight and has not stretched much since. However, I can wear it for a 12 hour day with no rubs spots or annoying pinch points. If I had a big gut, it wouldn't fit me. The arms are tight on me. I could have gone XL but I don't like a sloppy jacket and don't wear thick clothing underneath. I also planned on losing a few lbs.
Over-pants - buy your waist size, these are overpants. I wear 36' jeans and that is what fits, over my jeans. The guarding is excellent and they are very comfortable. The length is not great however so if your taller than me I wouldn't buy them. I have a 32" inseam and they just work. Any longer inseam and they'd be too short. These pants are a combo of leather and textile.
Additional features - way too many pockets and such on the jacket. They have a zip down front panel on either side of the main zipper with an assortment of useless pockets inside the panel. They would be much better off using that same feature with snaps to hold the panel in the down position and having mesh behind the panel so to have two very large vents. I only use the two regular pockets and never the two panel pockets.
Venting - is only fair on the jacket. Two vents in front, and two in back. Not a lot of air gets through but that could be because the jacket fits me snug. If they did what I suggested above, the venting would be superior. BMW Rallye, First Gear, Klim adventure riding gear all have that. Great feature that FXRG should have too. The venting on the over-pants is surprisingly very good. As a matter of fact, it is cooler wearing these in heat than jeans and does prevent the engine heat from getting through to that special spot of ours. The pants do sag in the ass. Definitely not chick magnet pants. Good luck finding any over-pants in a dealer, they just don't stock them. I bit the bullet and ordered them without seeing them.
Crash protection - unfortunately I can report on this too. In July I rode my BWM 1200GS into the back of a flat deck truck, somersaulted over the deck, and landed on my back in the road next to the truck. I was ambulance'd to hospital but miraculously sustained only bruises to my shins and hip, my wrists and thumb. I was not wearing the FXRG over-pants. My Nolan modular helmet is a write off as is my bike. The jacket did not have a scratch on it. My back is still sore but that is because I landed directly on it from about 6' in the air. So the jacket provides good protection. Oh BTW, the gloves are very good. Big scrapes and gouges on the knuckles from my crash and not a mark on my hands. My wrists and thumb still hurt but nothing could protect that.
As I ride a Road Glide and BMW I wanted something that would work for both bikes. This gear fits the bill. As far as pricing, I priced against BMW and Klim, which would look pretty dorky on the Road Glide, and they were a lot more $'s. Klim is 3x's the price.
If anyone wants pictures of some of the features, let me know. The HD website isn't good for that.
I also bought the textile version of this jacket, and the matching leather over-pants, for my wife. She really likes it. The textile version is much lighter but just as good. The woman's over-pants are excellent. Better fit than the men's and fit true to size. Her ass looks great in them.
I would highly recommend FXRG gear.

What makes the leather waterproof? Does the liner that is sewn in contribute to the waterproofness? (I know the removable liner doesn't)

I crashed in my FXRG Leather...HARD!!!!!!!! With all the Armor...I was wearing the Jacket..Over pants...Gloves & Shoei Helmet...I still wear the jacket to this day...I took out the helmet...but received a concussion ..the Shoei worked Great..saved my head..the leathers with me inside them slid across an on ramp after getting tuned up by someones muffler in the apex of the turn....Shit luck...it has battle scars which I proudly display..but FXRG is true to it's name...XTREME Riding Gear...it Works...all I can say...

The leather is treated. If you look at the latest version of the jacket you can see it almost has a synthetic look and feel to it, though it is leather. The sewn in lining is more for wind that moisture.
I also treated all the seams in mine when I first got it, so that helped too I'm sure.

I bought mine in 2005 and have since taken all other jackets out including my BMW Kalahari jacket. The wife wears the Triumph jacket once in a while, but I think Santa will bring her an FXRG this year. It's warm, waterproof, protective, and it looks good.
What more can you ask from a humble jacket?

Bought mine in 06 and haven't looked back. Worth every penny. Bought my wife one in march. Last years model at Ray Price HD in Raleigh, NC. Just happen to stop in and saw it there for 50% off!! Too good to pass up even though it was a men's coat. It was size medium and worked out perfect for her. Great deal...hope I can find the same deal when I need a new one.

If I saw one on my size 50% off, I'd probably by it just for the principle, plus, I think it would be good to have a spare.
