Beware moose in Maine
My 'cage' is a full size late model 4x4 Toyota Tundra. I hit a 90-110 lb. doe on a narrow 2 lane doing about 50 and there was $5,400. damage to the truck. The only thing the deer was good for after impact was coyote bait.
Deer are very dangerous, but here in Maine the more serious problem is moose. They're almost invisible at night because of their color, their eyes don't reflect the headlights like deer, and they're a lot less road weary than deer. Weight of an adult is 700-1,200 lbs. You hit one in a car or light truck and you're typically gonna spend a long time in the hospital, or worse. Hit one on a bike and chances are very good that you will not survive. And the state just did some aerial surveys and found that our moose population is about 4 times larger than they previously estimated.
When riding in Maine, (or any state with a significant moose population) try to get to your destination before dark. The life you save might very well be your own!

The moose mating season is just starting - does that effect the bulls the same way it does other animals - lot less shy and much more aggresive toward a precievied threat??

My hunting buddy and I got a 600 lb. cow last year. It's a very lean meat so it's best to cook it low and slow, or braise it. Done right it tastes a lot like beef. I much prefer it over venison.

They have the same problem with elk in the SW. A few years ago I was warned of them when in Albequerque. Apparently they are a real issue down there and do some SERIOUS damage when you hit one with a vehicle. I can see it, MUCH bigger than a deer, and seem less skittish so their likely to stand right where they're at till you hit them.
