Potato Potato Potato
What ever happened to that Harley sound.
I have it on my 2005 Fat Boy. (carburated)
But my stock Road Glide sounds like my next door neighbor's Honda Shadow.. ..
Is it that Fuel Injected engines will not have this low idle and thus will never have the signature Potato Potato Potato sound that I grew up loving ?

Basically, yes. A cam will give it a lope or chop to the idle, but it will never sound like a shovel.

One of the things I've always loved about Harley was the iconic lope.
I was very disheartened to find out that I will never have that sound in my RG.. my first and only Harley purchase.

It does suck that they dont sound like that anymore but you could always build one that does

it is the FI and the higher idle required
My Shovels and Pan all idle around 450-500 rpm

The low idle on the older model HD sounded good but it was bad for the engine!! The lower the idle the lower the oil psi so when you were getting the potato, potato sound you were lacking oil flow to the top of the engine and that is what would damage the top end. The higher idle is better for the engine and it should be left alone.

All the electronics on the new bikes require them to idle faster to keep the charging up.

I richened the mixture on my 02,and turned the idle down to get it to do that...
I have toyed with the idea of trying to make my rg do it too,and it might with the right cam,and maybe if I screwed around with the idle settings on my map...I at least would like to turn it down a bit.
