Clutch cable replacement/adjustment
Let me just say one word about this. FRUSTRATING. Especially once I realized the problem.
Ok, a little history. 2012 FLTRU. I recently replaced my stock bars with 12.5" Chubbys from Wild1s. Ended up replacing both the clutch and brake cable due to the width of the bars (I had heard that you didn't need to with 12's but I just couldn't make them reach).
Everything is pretty straightforward as far as removing and replacing everything. Got the air out of the brake line and bled them out well. Just need to take the bike in and get the ABS running again. Routed the new clutch line and started adjusting. No go. Adjusted again. Still not getting it. Adjusted again and again trying to figure out what I might have done wrong and then found that I needed to adjust the clutch pack. (Did I mention that I haven't bought a manual yet). So I learned how to adjust the pack and finally got a working clutch. Double checked, triple checked everything. Good to go.
Went for a four day camping ride through Colorado with buddies and found that when I got on the throttle the clutch would slip. Was fine otherwise. Got back home and worked on it over and over again but couldn't figure out why I couldn't adjust it properly without running out of cable adjustment.
Long story short, I started over today and realized that with the cable attached to the clutch I wasn't getting enough free play to properly adjust the clutch pack. Released cable from lever and readjusted everything. WOW. Works perfect now and even has an easier pull on the lever. I have learned a lot through trial and error but this one was a pain.
So if your going to replace your cable or need to do an adjustment on your clutch pack make sure that you have ALL the free play available in your cable.

Yep, and there's plenty of clutch adjustment how-to's on the inter-web. You gotta have that free play in the cable. If I'm unfamiliar with whatever I'm working on, I get as much info about it as I can before I start - which may include asking questions here. But it starts with the service manual.

Yeah, I did mention the lack of manual. Thing is I have one for a 05 Touring sitting out there and never even thought to open it. Read up on the web and watched the videos. Did everything right except actually disconnecting the cable from the lever to allow complete free play. It was keeping me from getting max adjustment out of the clutch pack. Always mean to go pick up a new manual but never get around to it. Maybe this weekend. Or maybe not.
