Default RIP Duane Allman

Remembering Duane Allman today, on what would have been his 66th birthday.
Howard Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 October 29, 1971)

'Skydog' is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in The Allman Brothers Band, and in particular for his expressive slide guitar playing and inventive improvisational skills. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Allman at #2 in their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, second only to Jimi Hendrix and in 2011 he was ranked #9. His tone (achieved with a Gibson Les Paul and two 50-watt bass Marshall amplifiers) was named one of the greatest guitar tones of all time by Guitar Player.

He was born in Nashville and tragically died in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia in 1971 at the age of 24.

Let your soul shine,
It's better than sunshine,
It's better than moonshine,
Damn sure better than rain.
Lord, now people don't mind,
We all get this way sometimes,
Gotta let your soul shine, shine till the break of day.

The photo was taken at the Fillmore East on June 26, 1971.

I was in junior high... remember hearing about how he couldn't stop the Sportster in time to avoid running into the truck that stopped suddenly in front of him. I have always liked his/their music.

Duane is on the left, Berry Oakley on the right. I took this when I stopped off at Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon to pay my respects while on the way to Daytona in 2001. I think there is a security fence around the plot now.

Default Duane

If I remember right, Barry was killed 1 year almost to the day after Duane, on a Harley, about a block or 2 from Duane's accident
site.
Probably listen to Allman Bros music, at least a song or 5 every time I ride. They have some great music.

I love riding late at night, early morning on a warm starlit night my favorite. Put on One Way Out or Statesboro Blues or probably the best post Duane jam the Brothers ever did and best riding song, Southbound, and the music will take you deep in the night....watch it though by the time Southbound is over you may look down and be doing triple digits

They were about 3 blocks apart--a block over and a block up. Duane was killed in late October of 71, Berry in Nov of 72. A peach truck was not involved in either mishap. A truck carrying a crane turned in front of Duane, and Berry rounded a curve and couldn't stay in his lane, hitting a city bus.

Duane was killed instantly as his bike landed on top of him and dragged him down the road. Berry said he was okay after his accident and went home where he lived a few hours before dying of the result of a fractured skull.

Bass guitarist Berry Oakley died less than 13 months later in a similar motorcycle crash with a city bus, three blocks from the site of Duane Allman's fatal accident. Oakley's remains were laid to rest beside Duane Allman's in Macon, Georgia's Rose Hill Cemetery

The motorcycle bounced up in the air and landed on Allman and proceeded to skid another 90 feet with Duane pinned underneath, crushing his internal organs. Though he was still alive when he arrived at the hospital, despite emergency surgery, he died several hours later from massive internal injuries. He was just weeks from his 25th birthday.
