I run those speakers with the Rockford X2 mentioned earlier. It will handle 2,4 or 8 ohm loads so no problem there.
Plays loud & clean for me..

JMJohn himself told me on this forum a couple months ago that if I didn't intend to use an amp to use the "standard" speakers, and if I wanted to use the Rokker XTs to use an amp, which tells me 2 things:
1. The J&M "standard" speakers were not really ever intended to be used with an amp.
2. The Rokker XT speakers were not really intended to be used without an amp.
A person can get away with using some products outside of the parameters intended by the manufacturers, believe me, I've done it plenty, but it seems like audio equipment is not one of those places. Go ahead and try it, but 9 times out of 10 it doesn't work out real well.
J&M has been in the motorcycle audio business a long time. We all know how picky motorcycle folks can be, I doubt they would have made it this long selling crap.
