Hell, I had to wait about 40 years to do that. Then Bing introduced their "interpreter" application.

The more I read about registering my car and bike in Japan, the more it looks like several grand will be burned at the hands of the Navy for sending me out there

Still can't say for today, but 40-45 years ago the Japanese Govt. was already EXTREMELY protective of their own internal products and did everything they could to prevent sales of "Made In USA" products. However... some products (like HDs, muscle cars, etc.) brought such a high profit (depending upon the product) that it may have been worth the pain to get the gain.
On the other hand, their mass-transit was also already excellent and you can always buy some cheap transportation (maybe used) there too. Tough decision Lowmaks but it will be a real experience too and I hope your PCS is rewarding overall.

Well, I still plan to get at least the bike there...maybe not the car. in either case, I'll try to enjoy it. The liberty policy is terrible there right now apparently, do I'll have that to look forward to in addition to the near impossibility of getting my bike there. I guess that's y they call them ”orders” instead of ”options.”

Ya' sure have got that "orders" business pegged right Lowmaks .
What's the deal on liberty?
I had some buddies that got sent there PCS but never was myself... just passed through a bunch of times but no 1st-hand knowledge about what the "rules" are for PCS types, especially these days.
I was also pretty bull headed anyway (much better now, of course ) and took some chances WRT how far I wandered away from Yoko and/or Sasebo (and what kind of a neighborhood I was in ).

Every time any American military member gets in trouble, every command in Japan has to fast cruise, plus liberty for all hands regardless of rank or living arrangements expires at 2300.

Just found out that not only does Progressive not going to cover me in Japan, but they won't honor my loyalty discount when I get back... even though my car policy will be active the whole time I'm gone. The first thing I understand, but the second is bs. If I have an active (almost 10 years) policy on my car and get shipped out, why can't you still honor it on my bike when I get back?

Don't tell them you are leaving, or change to USAA when you get back. Allstate did that to me when I was deployed in the early 90s, so I switched to State Farm and never went back.
