how do you bleed front brakes.

Same as you would with a Car.... pump the handle a few times.... then have someone open the bleeder valve on the caliper.... when your lever is all the way to the grip HOLD IT THERE until the bleeder valve is closed again... keep on doing that until there is no more air coming out and the pressure is good again.... having 2 people makes it a hell of a lot better.

You will need:

DOT4 brake fluid (Sealed can... that stuff draws water like crazy, so always work with a new can)
a small hose that fits snug over the bleeder valve nipple
a wrench that fits the bleeder valve (mostly a 10 mm open end or a line wrench)
a can or a old oil bottle to catch what comes out of the bleeder valve.

I know this is a little dated thread but many have read it so I will also chime in. Often if your brake system is drained or had a massive leak, once you fix the leak you may find it nearly impossible to get the prime to bleed the brakes. The best method I have found was to buy a hand operated vacuum pump from "sears" or wherever you find one open the bikes master reservoir and fill to the top then go to caliper put vacuum pump hose on bleeder screw and open the bleeder and pump like crazy. Once you have gotten fluid out go back to the traditional style of bleeding brakes. Hope this save's some time for someone!

For the fluid type
Make sure you check the manual for your bike , although the 2011 may use Dot 4 fluid my 2001 uses Dot 5 and it is never a good idea to mix them so be sure you are using whatever the manual calls for.

I would just like to add that if you are doing this (anyone) cover up all parts ESPECIALLY PAINTED!!! that the brake fluid could come in contact with. Brake fluid with eat away your paint almost immediately and you will not be a happy camper.

Make sure you keep an eye on the master cylinder so you dont bleed it dry. It will empty very quickly and youll need to start from square one AGAIN. A lil FYI

+1 with justchillaxin1 on the vaccuum pump but keep topping up your reservoir until the new brake fluid and no air bubbles are seen coming from your calipers. Start with the left disc caliper and then do the right second.

Word of caution DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 brake fluids will damage your paintwork. Use plenty of rags to cover your paintwork and have a small bucket of soapy water handy to clean immediately if some fluid gets onto your paintwork.
