Thinking about getting my carry permit

its both reasons....i haven't been able to conceal it very well..im 6'5" and 285 # i got no extra room for inside the waist....tried wearing my Berreta px storm compact on the back of my hip with my shirt out but it drives me crazy when i sit down. probably losing 50# would make a big difference....due to my size and looks I'm not real worried about being messed with but worry more about being attacked at home by someone who dosent know me.

I have never been able to wear inside the waistband either--never enough extra room in my jeans/pants. What works for me is a paddle holster so it can be moved forward a bit if I'm going to sit down, say at a restaurant. Actually I usually leave it not right on my hip but a bit forward where my arm hanging down is right over it. And so with my shirtail (even just a HD tee-shirt) out it is, for the most part, concealed. A sharp eyed cop would pick up on the fact I am carrying but most folks wouldn't notice the slight bulge--but so what cause I'm legal. Riding is when I may slide it back a bit more onto my hip. And sometimes I carry a 2 1/2" S&W .357 and sometimes a KIMBER 4" .45. The S&W is not as slim as the Kimber but it still isn't noticeable unless you are really sharp eyed. And the paddle holster is great because you can take it off or put it on very quickly and not have to thread through belt loops.

I believe concealment is required in some states. Also, my thoughts on carrying exposed is that I don't want my potential attacker to know I'm carrying. If he wants me bad enough, he'll first try to remove my ability to use my gun or incapacitate me from a distance. Element of surprise. If I'm in a crowded environment and some nut job starts shooting folks, I don't want him to target me first when he sees my gun.

As far as concealment, I use an IWB holster but not inside my waistband. I clip it behind my belt on my backside and a t-shirt or shirt tails cover it. I carry a Kel Tec PF9 which is single stack and thin enough to comfortably carry this way and be able to rapidly access with either hand.

I carry a S&W M&P 9 mm compact. I have a Crossbreed IWB holster. I am over 6'3" so I have to be conscious of what shirt I'm wearing and how far I stretch my arms. However, as far as "printing" goes, I don't worry a whole lot. With everyone carrying cell phones today, the average citizen probably doesn't know. I'm sure that law enforcement suspect it though.
