Default Possible Electrical Charging issues???

I have a 2011 RGU with 20K miles on it. I have extra tail lights on the Street Glide type rear fender facia at the bottom of the rear fender. I have a complete 8 speaker/extra amp HOGTUNES stereo system. I have a GARMIN GPS/XM Radio system and I have Iphone connection to my system to play music from my phone thru the stereo. I have and electric suit plug in and thermostat, all hard wired. I live in SW Arkansas where I ride almost year round, but the heated suit is only used about 5 months outa the year, and only part time then (early morning commutes to work).


The issue is a dragging starter or stalling when you first attempt to start the engine. Not all the time, very random, but 5K miles ago, it NEVER did this.

I have had it in to have the compression release/starter system checked, it was OK. 2K later had it in to have the charging system/battery checked. According to HD Tech, system is on the bottom of the charge scale at about 13.8 Volts at running rpm. Says battery (approx 2 yrs old) is charged but probably weak. Says if kept on trickle when not in use, would help the issue. Says 1 start requires approx 35 miles of driving to gain back power used for starting one time. I only drive approx 18 miles one way to work every day. This was never an issue until a few months ago.

I have kept on a trickle charger (good, Shcumacher brand) this week...no difference in the starting habits.... it might start right off, it might drag.

This is not the same "Compensator" issue that plagues 103 engines until you install the SE compensators or compression releases. Been down that road, not the same deal.

I see a new battery in my future as a possible cure, but not sure my charging system is up to snuff at 13.8V @ driving speed. (even with all accessories turned off, it did not increase charging voltage as I turned off accessories as it should had something been drawing a heavy electrical load)

ANyone else been down this road? looking for a little help cuz my HD tech is not getting me where I need to be. My scoot should not drag at starting..it didnt used to do this and it does now...what has changed????

Most likely all your electrical draw without fully recharging has done not so nice things to your battery. I would normally call BS on the 18 mile thing, but not with all your electrical draw.
Put a new battery on it and see what you can do about rsducing the draw bit, or be religious about the charger from the start on the new battery.

Could very well be the battery. Just because its only two years old is not an indicator of its condition. I've seen new batteries just out of the box crap out in short order. One thing to check just for sh!ts and giggles is your connections especially the grounds. Even though they look clean on the outside doesn't mean there isnt corrosion on the contact areas.

You might be on to something. Just frustrating that it all started a few months ago after some 15K trouble free miles of never doing this. Now it does, but it shouldn't do it at all. Most of the electrical draw is not in use 99% of the time...another frustrating fact that would seem not to cause the issue. I guess I need to start unplugging or disasbleing each electrical accessory until I find which one is responsible for drawing down the charge voltage to 13.8...seems like it should be something over 14V..but I can't seem to get there as is.

According to the Power Vision I just put on my bike, it runs at 14.1 all the time, except for just a bit after starting.

There was a post back a while that had a great attachment on how to get your current battery up to snuff, do a search before you buy a new battery. Just my 2 Cents.
