Hlep - Feb Trip to Austin

My son-in-law and I are planning a Feb getaway from St Louis, MO to Austin, TX. We plan on trailering the bikes to Austin and then spending about 5-7 days riding.

What kind of weather can we expect?

Any suggestions on places to stay (where we can leave the auto and trailer)?

Suggestions of places to see and roads to ride?

Thanks for you help.

Boy.....in February! The weather can change from one day to the next, but as the old adage goes about Texas weather...."Don't like the weather now, give 15 minutes, it'll change". Anways, I would expect some cold to mild days. Coldest I've ever been in the hill country was 17 degree in February in Fredericksburg, TX. I was happy to not be on a bike that time. You should be okay though.

Others will chime in on places to ride, but one of my favorites is 1431 from Cedar Park (just north of Austin) to Marble Falls and back. I say back b/c going both ways just adds something extra.

U never know bout temps around this time, bring ur winter gear! Some other roads would b 150 from kyle to Dripping Springs, 306 n 32 over devils back bone, Fischer store rd. off of 32 is great. Ranch rd. 12, 16 from Kerrville to Medina. Just a few. Also three sisters out around Leakey.

as Paul said, the 1431 ride is a great ride and the area around Fredricksburg and Kerrville is some great riding also.

since your that close, don't forget about the "3 Sisters" ride out of Lakey TX

Unless there is a reason for staying in Austin, I would base yourself around Fredricksburg or Kerrville.

West of Austin more hills:

from 620/Anderson mill out Anderson Mill: Lime creek road, 1431, out to Marble Falls, up 281 to Park 4 towards Llano connecting to 29. Then to Coopers BBQ in Llano. South on 16, Willow Loop, Get to Fredricksburg and back raod into Luckenbach. you can split 2 ways, one West to Kerrville and the Twisted Sisters (335, 336, 337). East Go 1623 or 1888 down to Blanco. You can go South to Devil's Backbone go up to Wimberly and then twisted roads back to 1826. Lot's of turns.

East of Austin, more level but there are some great twisted back roads:

112 out of Taylor to Lexington, work your way to College Station for lunch. south on 6 to Navasota and theEast on 105. Go to Brenahm for Ice Cream or the small side road 78, 57, 48 & 49 around the North side. Skip down to 71 via fm 448 and go West. Take Park 1C north just out of Smithville to Bastrop.

Is that enough road for 2 days? And don't forget the painted Church ride of Central Texas.

Check out Rudy's BBQ. When you go, tell them you are a rookie, and they'll give you a sample of just about everything they have. I love their Moist Brisket!!!

Oh, and don't forget to head up to Horny Toad HD in Temple, and say hi to PC Pain. He's back in the Parts Dept.

Definitely go to coopers in llano and get the chop. Take your appetite. Get there by 11. Others have noted some good rides. The single ranch roads west of enchanted rock are great. The hilltop cafe on 87 outside of fredricksburg is really good. There are also some great single lane roads around blanco that are fun to explore. Lots of low water crossings so be careful if the there is water running over the roads but the scenery is beautiful.
