Kentucky Route 22..MAN what a trip!!
Early Easter Sunday, a glorious spring day in the Bluegrass, we decided to ride the entire length or Ky. 22 thinking passing through a place called Bethlehem (Ky.) on Easter would be a good thing. Now I've rode parts of 22 many times since it starts in Louisville and knew how tasty the road was with about every kind of curve you can think of all the way to Dry Ridge. I, however, had never been east on 22 east of Williamstown....
Holy sh%t what a ride, miles of switchbacks, the road going up and down through the northern Kentucky hills. A lot of places you could see well enough through the corners you could take as much of the road as you needed. The road kept getting better and better till it ended in Willow. Saw few Harleys but an abundance of sport bikes. At the intersection of 22 and 10 there is an old school house and there were about 50 sport bikes gathered there. Don't know what was going on there or just their hangout but we went east 20 miles to Maysville.
From there we took 68 through horse country. I've always loved that road. Nothing special riding wise, just some hills, but the Thoroughbred horse farms between especially Paris and Lexington makes some of the prettiest riding in Kentucky. The stone walls that line the road in places from the 1800's, beautiful.
Wanting to spend some time with our family on Easter we slabbed it back to Louisville from Lexington. About a 300 mile loop. As we busted down I-64 not a cloud in the sky and surrounded by the lush green of early spring and past more horse farms it reminded me just how lucky I am to live near some of the best riding anywhere, riding people travel hundreds of miles to find is right here.
If you ever get the chance, check out Kentucky 22, you won't regret it!
