Ruidoso, N.M.

Any members out there ever visit this little mountain hideaway? I've been living in West Texas for about 10 years now and have never made the trip. I'll be returning from Iraq in the next month or two and mama wants to take a road trip on the Road Glide, who am I to deny her. Anyways if anyone out there is familar with the area I was wondering what are the scenic routes around there.

82 thru Cloudcroft is nice.

I am going thru Ruidoso on an IBA ride in June (Bun Burner 1500): Phx-Las Cruces-Roswell-Lubbock-Amarillo-Albuquerque-Holbrook-Payson-Phx

1500 miles in the summer. That will make for some monkey butt for sure. Thanks for the tip on 82.

Agreed. I'd take 244 and white mountain road from cloudcroft to ruidoso. Not much on the 4 lane hwy 70.

Also you might want continue on 48 north out of ruidoso to 37 at Angus and stop at Bonito Lake for a nice picture.

The valley of fire is about an hour from there northwest on 380.

If you make it to San Antonio,NM stop at Manny's Tavern for a green chile cheeseburger, it's better the the one at the Owl Cafe.

From there I'd back track unless I was up for Sante Fe or Flagstaff.

Dude, I explored that area last August on my way up to Rocky Mountain National Park. I camped in Lincoln National Forest not far from Ski Apache. 6 bucks a night. Ruidoso was the "town" at the bottom of the mountain from my camp. I have GPS coords I can get to you a little later if you have a unit and you're interested. If you have time to head north out of there as well, holy shit, there are some great roads. I could write a book.

PM me and I can get some info and pics together for you if you like.

June is the best time to do one of these rides, the 21st is the solstice and you have the most daylight.

I did my BB1500 kind of in reverse of what you did but I had an advantage- leaving at 3 am I hit I-10 in San Antonio and headed west. Turned around at Lordsburg and came back east. Never really had any sun in our eyes, you'll be looking into it the whole way.

You do know, that if you got onto I-10, from just east of El Paso to well beyond Junction the speed limit it 80? That's about 700 miles of your ride (round trip) that you can legally crank it up. Scenery's not the best, but then again, neither is Amarilluh and Lubbock. It's all about endurance anyway, so who cares about the scenery. Oh, and if you ride through that part of Texas after a rain you'll love the smell of money on those roads. Nothing like wet cow manure and the oilfields! ChaCHING!

Good luck on your quest!

Thanks Andyman... we do one every year, whether we need to or not. Last year was 5 of us.

We start out at midnight, so we'll be heading NE by sunrise.

Yeah, we looked at staying on 10 thru EP, but we always try to include a little bit of scenery - the jaunt from Las Cruces over to Lubbock, and the stretch from Holbrook back into the valley.

By the way, the Owl is popular LEO hangout. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just saying...
