Kansas City @rush hour?

Headed west in a few days, first stop Salina, KS. to visit a friend....Ill be hitting KC around rush your. Is there any good way around town? Even 2 lanes are OK if Its not a huge detour.

BTW leaving there will be headed south to Dodge City to pick up 50, is there any must do's around there?

Thanks a lot

Coming in from the East in the PM traveling West on I-70 you should be OK because you will be going the opposite way that Rush hour traffic is going. Once you get to downtown continuing West on I-70 you will hit some traffic and I'm not sure you can avoid it. As long as you stay away from I-35 South or North out of downtown and off of 435 you should be ok.

I-70 West out of downtown will be heavy but so will any other route I can think to send you.

Count the day lost if you don't catch hell for something

The bypasses and I-70 east are always real congested. Not that that is a big deal since you're heading west (I-70 west...usually not so bad). And like BigJack said, there's not really a quick detour/bypass. I think it's best to just stay on 70.

Hope you have a safe trip.

Why not look at US 50? You will still get a bit of traffic once in the KC area, but far less than I70 across the state. West of Jefferson City US 50 is 90% 4 lane

Not a bad alternative to 70. Especially if you're wanting to take a road less traveled, but I wouldn't take it through KC.

US 50 is a great alternative to I-70. In St. Louis, take I-44 up to the Union Exit. From there, US-50 is a nice riding 2 lane road. Right there at the Union Exit is Bourbouse Valley HD, which is a great little shop if you need what I call a Harley Stop. I take US-50 all the time to go from St. Peters to Columbia to visit my daughter (hang a right at Jeff City). Takes just a little longer, but it is a much more peaceful ride than I-70 (which is very congested, lots of trucks, idiot cars and boring). Never really have gone much past Jefferson City on it, but as previously posted, it seems to be 4 lanes. Follow the locals advice on US-50 in KC. If it is surface streets, avoid it.

In theory, Theory and Reality are the same. In reality, they are different.

I think 50 is an awesome idea just to avoid I-70 across MO. The only issue you have is once you hit KC you will wind up on 470 and 435 heading West. Shouldn't be that big of issue until you hit the state line on 435 where rush hour traffic will get heavy. There is some construction on the Kansas side at 69 Hwy that can be a mess.

Still I think 50 Hwy across MO would be a much better ride than I-70

I've thought about 50 and was gonna pick it up in Dodge City. My intent was to get a lot of miles the first day but we'll see.

Just got my bike back from being serviced and oil is seeping out again from who knows where ...wiped it down good and took for a test ride thinking maybe when they serviced it they left some residue but seems to still be seeping even got some on my helmet?????? Frickin' bike hasn't leaked since I tried to take my last f*ckin' trip....even got some extra time off so I could leave early....so much for that

There's no good way around KC during rush hour, especially on the south side where there's a lot of construction going on. How about this (a little convoluted, but it'll get you around KC and to Salina on a boat-load of 2-lanes): US-50 like others have noted, but hang a left on MO-13 just before Warrensburg and then head west on MO-2. Stay on 2 until you hit Kansas, where it becomes KS-68. KS-68 to KS-268 to KS-31 to US-56 to US-77 to KS-4 to I-135 to Salina. I did this route a couple of weeks ago and, other than some repaving on KS-68 outside of Ottawa (which should be done by now...hopefully), the roads were great. Another option, if the whole repaving thing is too wonky, you can head north on US-59 at Ottawa, up to Lawrence where you can pick up I-70 (toll road) out to Salina. Or....
