Steamtown Scranton, PA
our club took a weekend trip to Steamtown in Scranton, PA.
Steamtowm is administered by the National Park Service. $7 admission is reasonable.
As of Sat 6/23/12 they didn't have any steam locomotives in operation. They were running 1/2 hour rides with an old diesel. We didn't take the train ride.
Steamtown is the site of the old Erie Lackawanna maintenance shop and freight yard.
They have an operating turntable, a reconstructed round house, full maintenance shop, a short movie, a large switching yard with old pieces of railroad equipment and various historical displays.
The highlight of the day for me was the tour of the maintenance shop. They are currently doing the maintenance necessary to bring three of the steam locomotives back on line. The tour was comprehensive and gave us a good idea of how the machinery worked. Good stuff.
PA has some great scenery but the roads we used were a bit rough.
If you're looking for an excuse for a ride, Steamtown is worth a visit.
