That Dam Ride!

For the last year I've been tweaking a ride that takes me over the dams of several area lakes. I call it my Dam Ride.

I was able to get it to a Dozen Dams, and while some are large, some small, it's a good ride...just not in the heat!

Today I finally got a chance to ride it with my camera hanging around my neck. My goal is to get a shot of the bike on each one of the dams I rode across.

I woke up this morning and realized it was in the 60s, and the afternoon high was to be around 90. 60s! 90! It hasn't been that cool in Kansas City since I can't remember! I'd have to wear a jacket. A jacket! Haven't worn a jacket in the morning since April, I think. What a gorgeous day. And while 90 is still hot, it's nothing compared to the 100+ temps we've been having around here.

I start at Shawnee Mission park, a good sized lake with lots of joggers, bicyclists, and horses. Check out the mist rising on the water:

Most dams around here are earth-works, and this is the one at Shawnee Mission:

Next stop was Wyandotte County Lake, a really nice lake with lots of twisty roads surrounding it. I guess I'm also catching each spillway/release gate in the shots, too!

What's cool about this dam is that it's actually high in the hills and bluffs above the Missouri river valley.

After WCL, two of my favorite roads: KS-5 to Lansing/Leavenworth and KS-92. Fun roads with sweeping curves, some tricky technical curves, and nice views. Check it out if you haven't yet. Next stop, Lake Perry. A beautiful lake, with good roads around it, and most of the time I'm there I see sailboats tooling around. Notice how low the lake level is. I know there's a drought going on (KC is over 13" behind for the year in precipitation) and a lot of the Corps of Engineers lakes are releasing water to help downstream farmers and communities. I saw lots of ponds that were basically mud...hard times if we don't get some rain. More on this later.

The water was still when I was there.

On to Clinton Lake near Lawrence. Lots of red-and-blue chickens running around, so I didn't stay too long. I think they were serious about not wanting folk to be around the spill gate!

A few fisher-persons hanging around the dam.

From the other end of the dam, looking back to the north. Again, note how dramatically low the lake level is.

I mentioned how dry it's been throughout the midlands, and most of the corn looks like this:

Farmers are either plowing their crops under or doing this, something I've never seen before...baling the dried-up stalks to use as silage, about the only thing it's good for now. We're all going to be paying for this in the grocery stores...

OK, back to the ride. A short distance south of Clinton Lake is a small private lake, Lone Star. Based on the concrete used in the dam support walls, it looks like this lake was built some time in the '20s or '30s.

Again, there were just a few folk out fishing when I cruised through.

Where to next...Melvern Lake and a Really Long (over two miles!) dam/retention wall, and two nice, small lakes built in the spillway with gobs of camping. Looked like a nice place to hang out.

Scary how tinder dry it was around there.
