Riding around Lake Michigan - Ideas?

All,

I'm looking for input from local MI and WI riders (or travelers with good experiences).

I'm planning to ride out this weekend from NY. I'm headed west past Lake Erie and then north through Michigan, crossing to the UP of Michigan and headed West to Wausau area for work Tuesday-Wednesday. Any sights I need to see? I plan to touch all three great lakes (Huron, Michigan and Superior) on the journey. Hotel recommendations in Northern Michigan, perhaps near the bridge to the UP?

After work near Wausau, I plan to head down to Milwaukee and visit the HD Museum and factory. The route home heads south around Chicago and back east. Any sights I need to see in/around Milwaukee or on the trip around the southern end of Lake Michigan? Hotel recommendations around Milwaukee are also appreciated.

Cheers,
G

M-22 is nice riding on the west side of the state. If you head over that way the you may as well hit the tunnel of trees which is M-119. once you pop out of the trees eat lunch at Legs Inn which is in Cross Village, MI. Also below the bluffs near Cross Village is cabins for rent that aren't too expensive and are on the water and very nice. From there head up on over the mighty Mac and while in the UP stay near the coast the riding in the middle is straight and boring.

When heading back, make sure to avoid Chicago during rush hour. Otherwise you will be looking at around 1.5-2 hours of nasty traffic just to make it out of the city. Try to ride through here late am/ early afternoon.

One more thing- get some cheese curds in Wisconsin. Trust me....

Trust me, too. Get some cheese curds.

Thursday nights are bike night at the you-see-em. Usually a couple hundred bikes. Food and drinks are available. If your schedule allows, try to hit the museum then.

About to make tracks - thanks for the tips!

I appreciate the info. I will likely ride M-119 as RedneckMedic66 suggested. You can be sure I will get some cheese curds - upstate NY is also known for cheese curd. I've also been to Madison, WI in the past and had beer battered, deep-fried cheese curds.

Museum is my plan for Thursday - including a tour of the engine plant. Looking forward to that. Thursday night bike night sounds awesome. I will check it out. Thanks for the tip Grind!

Chi-town - any suggestions on a good dealership to stop in on? I like to collect pins from different states that I ride though and I haven't picked up an Illinois pin yet.

Taking off tomorrow morning, but I'll check in along the way.

Don't speed excessively in the UP. Check out the sub in the water, some museum, the name escapes me.

I stayed in Manistique when I went around the lake last year.

Also fyi

I too have a 2012 rg ultra and just to let you know of some problems me and wife encountered.if you pack alot keep heavy gear in saddle bags. We were heavy and did not fill rear shocks to 50 psi.test ride your load before leaving. The steering was loose from factory and was hard to handle at low speed. Check for wobble by hitting 40 mph then let go of throttle if it wobbles on decel have it tightened before you go.also grease the neck with special grease ,i heard neck is not well lubed at factory. My neck took half a tube. Keep an eye on wheel weights 2 were hanging on double side tape flapping in the breeze. I have been back for 6 weeks and my hands are still sore ,i just got the heritage style bars and will be installing saturday. Before trip i put on hd hi pref bulbs and 1 lasted 4 days and the other 7 days . Also i put se hi pref fine wire plugs and started having bad pinging. Service guy said it was hi altitude, 100 degree temp and low octane fuel. It got so bad i put the platinums in ad it got 90% better.also the clutch was not adjusted from factory and it chattered on hills i had to fix it when i got home . I did not know you have to adjust at clutch first then cable.i have a 01 fat boy yhat i got new with 52k on it with no problems.i felt like trading RGU in for a gold wing, but cam to my sences.its sort of like a battered wife going back to her abuser...i love it. Well good luck on ride and hope you dont have any problems. P.s. Abs work very well.

There are a few dealerships in the Chicago area you can check out. When you leave Milwaukee you will probably take 94E. Chicago HD is off of that. 94 to 294s to willow Rd.

Nice place and it's easy to get to and not out of you way.

Also can check out Wild Fire HD in Villa Park. Off of the interstate 294S. Smaller shop but good people there.

There is a tourist HD shop downtown off of Ohio but I would not go there. Pain to get to and park.

Good luck! If have any questions hit me up.

I did the Lake Michigan circle tour a few years ago. As has been suggested, M-22 and M-119 along the eastern shore are good rides (be careful at dusk...lots of deer around M-119!). If you have time for a detour to Lake Superior, I'd check out Pictured Rocks near Munising. Then come back down along Lake Michigan. Check out Door County in WI. I rode in Oct and there was some kind of German fest going on, but it is worth going any time. The HD museum is a must. And watch traffic in Chicago...although, I rode on a Sunday and went right downtown without too much problem.

I just did the Circle Tour around Lake Superior last month. I thought it was a bit better than Lake Michigan (and a lot more miles). Hoping to do all the Great Lakes.

OH....if you have time, the dealer in DeKalb, IL has a vintage bike collection that is unreal.
