A Ride in the Clouds

Took a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway as planned this weekend, some really good riding and sights but the most memorable was my ride in the clouds near Mount Mitchell. Got a bad feeling headed in that direction, and shoulda turned around but came around a big turn directly into the clouds, I mean thick, dark, wet, cold clouds. Visibility less 5-10 yards at times. Kept thinking we'd punch through, only got worse. Was wondering if any others got caught up there in the same soup.

I thought about some pics but then thought, of what, I could barely make out the tail lights of the guy in front of me. The good thing was it was so bad, everyone seemed to be exhibiting a lot of self control, also good that there were 2 bikes in front of me and 3 behind, all driving very carefully. Only knew the one behind me though.

Did that a few years ago on the traveling State HOG show, which started in Mt Airy and moved to Blowing Rock then Asheville. Got to Blowing Rock and it rained all night which made the fog and cool air move in. The next morning sprinkles and fog bad enough that you could not see 5 feet in front of you. Road the parkway for a mile or so, but it was so bad we got on on 221 and worked our way down the mountain.

Extremely dangerous when it gets like this....

That is some scary stuff to ride in. We came across conditions like that in the Chinook Pass headed to the PNW M&G . Our added bonus was a Rock slide that we came across. Luckily there was a Humvee in front of us.

My buddy & I both wish we'd have turned around and gone to lower elevations like 221 which is a fantastic ride, we did it Saturday afternoon. Next time....

Since you know the area, we were past highway 80 where we could go south and were nearly equidistant to go back or push on.

exact thing happened to me there....visibility was only a few feet, i knew there was a ranger / info center coming up that required a left turn into it. when i did headlight appeared out of nowhere, i swerved and only missed a cop by inches ...i had two buddies following me close.... can't believe they didn't hit me....had to take a blind leap of faith and try the turn again....we sat at the info center for about 3 hours before it lifted enough that we could get about 50' visibility ....got down the parkway a couple of miles where it was clear and sunny.... i hate riding in the mountains

slaterman5, I understand how you feel, I'm sure there are many who'd agree, my buddy and certainly his GF may not want to go back for a while. Good decision on your part to stop & wait it out.

I will certianly check the most current weather much closer before setting out for the highest elevations but honestly I'd rather ride in the mountains than anywhere, so far. Sunday was bad for a couple of hours but it was only one of many rides in the mountains I've had, most were awesome. I have to blame my self for poor planning or not turning back for lower elevations at the first sign of the low clouds. I'm old but not too old to learn from my mistakes or admit 'em, hopefully...
