Arizona/New Mexico April Weather....

Although this is starting out to be far from your normal winter I was wondering if some of you Arizona/New Mexico guys could tell me how the weather is generally in Arizona and New Mexico about the middle of April. I have about a week to meander around out there. One of the things I wanna check out is the Coronado Scenic Byway and I guess the elevation goes up to about 5000ft. on that.

Anyway besides the weather guesses any other suggestions of obscure things to see or great rides would be appreciated. I've done Sedona, the Grand Canyon and a good bit of riding north of I-40 but not much south.

Thanks a lot

That a tough question to answer. It really depends on where you are riding. The north rim of the Grand Canyon doesn't even open up until May while Phoenix is going to be pretty warm. In April I'd say that you will want to stay below 5000ft and you should be alright.

Just as a suggestion, don't miss going to Prescott and taking 89A up and over to Jerome. One of the coolest little towns built on the top and side of a mountain. The way the streets are laid out will blow you away. Then you can continue on down after lunch there into the valley and arrive in Sedona. One very special ride for sure.

PS: Be sure and eat at the Haunted Hamburger in Jerome. Famous place with an outstanding view from the dining room or the deck of the whole valley.

It all depends on the elevation, riding in the valleys the temps can be anywhere from the 70's to the 100's riding at higher elevations will be anywhere between the 30's to the 70's so be prepared for a variety of temps.
The ride from Flagstaff through Payson down to Globe is real nice than you're not too far from Tombstone which is a neat town to visit.
If you like to stay a little bit on the warmer side you can follow the Colorado river from Yuma all the way up to Bullhead City and than ride up to Lake Mead in Nevada.
In the beginning of April there is Arizona Bike week which is in the Phoenix area and there is a lot of activities there but the downside is you are running around a city of 6 million people plus so there is a lot of traffic.
The last week of April there is the Laughlin River run which is in Laughlin,NV/Bullhead City, AZ which has a lot less traffic so you can enjoy the rides more.

AZ Bike Week is a great rally and plenty of beautiful riding out there. In NM you can expect mid to upper 60s for a high and mid to upper 30s for a low. Still a bit dicey in the upper elevations that time of year. So mountain riding is hit or miss.

And if you do go to Bike Week in Arizona, make sure you go out to Cave Creek and hang out at the Hideaway and several other places out there. You won't be disappointed.
