Denver to Denver West Coast Loop

Planning this for August. Almost exclusively 2 lane roads except where it really can't be avoided. I've done most of this before but does anyone have any suggestions?

Sasquatch likes this.

A suggested route
From Lewiston,Id /Clarkston,WA head south on Hwy129 down the Rattlesnake Grade
Becomes Hwy 3 in Oregon .The Hell's Canyon Scenic Highway.
Have lunch in Lostine at The Lostine Tavern on hwy82 (same road).
At La Grande take 244 to 395 north then 74 west to Heppner. If it's a Sunday top off your tank most stations in the area are closed .
Hwy 206 to Condon
Continue on 206 it connects to I- 84 along the River to Portland.
This area is called the Doughnut Hole. Pretty cool riding .
Very few cars .
Or avoid Portland and come out on the coast at Lincoln City . Where their is less congestion.
From Condon south on 19 to Fossil and on 218 to Antelope.
From Antelope take Hwy 293 to Hwy 97.
South on 97 to Madras. There's a nice biker friendly Best Western Hotel in Madras.
From there south on 97 to west on 126 to Sisters ,Or.
Hwy 22 to Salem and Lincoln City.

You are bypassing HWY 12 in southern Utah, a National Scenic Byway and an absolute awesome ride I did last August. You won't want to miss it if you haven't ridden it yet. I rode from Grand Canyon up around to St George and then up 12 northeast to Moab and then down to Durango and on East.

I'm probably going to refigure most of this. I'm doing this ride with my dad who is 73. After 40 years I've finally gotten him to start riding again and I'm just concerned that this may be too much for him to do. I don't mind putting these kind of miles in but I'm just not sure he's up to that level of riding every day.

Man, you are so close, take the time and drop down into Prescott Arizona and take 89A I think up to Jerome and experience a cool little town with a great view of the valley below. Eat you a burger at the Haunted Hamburger and sit on the outdoor balcony. Cold beer and great burgers. Then you can drop down into Sedona and work your way back up to Flagstaff. Also, look up the town of Seligmon, Az. It will throw you back in time of the good ole days on Route 66. It's just east of Kingman. Enjoy.

When you are that close to Glacier NP, Going to the Sun is a must.

On your SE Washington leg, stop by Palouse falls, it's a gravel road in but a great spot to see (and the roads around Starbuck, WA have some decent twisties. And drop me a message a couple days out. I'm in the Tri-Cities area and if I am off work I'll meet you for a beer or lunch on your travels.

What I'm looking at now is just getting my dad's RG to Portland and using that as a base as I have friends there. We'll probably do an out and back to Glacier and then another one down the PCH and maybe Yosemite before going back to Portland. As I said before I think the original plan is just too much for dad to handle. He started riding again at Bike Week in Daytona after a 40 year layoff. He's 73 and I don't want to push him too hard.

I would recommend a cooling vest for both of you especially on the Southern Ca, NV AZ sections. Best with a mesh jacket.
