Vegas to Colorado Springs

I'm hoping to ride out visit friends in Colorado Springs, CO next month (May) with an early departure time in the morning (May 12th) from Las Vegas (0500-0600ish)

Googlemap indicates 12hrs/814 miles LV to CS...so I plan to ride it out in one shot with the usual gas/hydrating stops along the way. I hit a summer storm in Utah last year during 3rd week of May which eliminated my Zion ride after I had gone through the South Rim.

For those of you who live in those areas along the I-15/I-70, what kind of weather should I expect on this ride? More of the same as last year? Or is your guess as good as mine and the hawt weather girls on TV? I plan to roll into Colo. Spr. late on the 12th if I make a rocket-run from LV to CS...or...mid-afternoon on the 13th (if I stop overnight in Grand Junction and explore a bit)...spend a couple of days with friends before they go on their trip, then head back toward the North Rim and hopefully up to Jacobs Lake and Cape Royal.

Opinions and caveats are appreciated...thanks!

I have no input on weather, except that it won't be hot here in Vegas yet.

I would highly suggest making it a slightly longer trip and take this route instead.

15 north to 9 east threw Zion. Then 89 north to scenic byway 12 east. (Avoid smiling so much you nearly go on the road). And then follow to 24 east which will dump you around green river on the 70.

I can give you good places to eat and stay also if interested.. Enjoy the ride.

Total crap shoot on the weather. I have gone from Denver to Mesquite via I70/I15 the first week of May for the last 13 years and have no idea what to expect until I am ready to hit the road. Hope for the best and plan for the worst. More often than not if a weather system is coming through Nevada, Utah, Colorado the high passes in Colorado will be wet and may have snow, and clear the next day. If that happens GrandJunction is a pretty good place to lay over on the leg to Colorado. Hope the weather cooperates for you. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

Make sure you do Hwy 12 - One of the BEST rides in Utah. Also consider dropping off I-70 down to Moab on 191 then ride back up on 128 - 128 runs along the Colorado river and is an amazing ride. Likewise, riding through Rocky Mtn Nat Park on Hwy 34 is another "Must Do" ride.

Damn - I need to get back out west!!!

Weather.com runs out to about May 7 as of this evening. Give it another week and you should be able to pull it up. They usually aren't too far off from what I can tell. If anything they have forecasted worse weather than we actually get.

I definitely agree on highway 12. Depending on how much time you have you could also take an extra day and run down highway 95 and then back up the million dollar highway. Or hit them on the return run.

Hey guys!...I just realized that if I do it right, I could actually qual for the IBA's Saddle Sore 1000!..well more like 1124-miles from my actual start in San Diego at 050-hours to my arrival at my destination in Colorado Springs before 1700-hours...or...1170-miles if I ride via the San Diego-Phoenix-Albuquerque-Santa Fe-Pueblo-Colorado Springs route...both 16~17hr rides....still within the 24hr time limit...I've ridden 10hour days before on far more uncomfortable bikes than my RGS...I think I can do another 6-7 hours easy with my trusty sled or pull in well before the 24hr mark

At any rate, I'll have to make a 1-day rocket-run or 2-day ride from SD to CS and be there by the 14th of May...I'll sight-see at my leisure after the 15th on the way back to SD either via the 25-40-8 route or the via the 25-70-15 route...either way this should be a hell of a way to celebrate my 61st b-day in May

Hey !rock103!...you wanna escort me outta Albuquerque???

Hey Troy...I hope to make to Cape Royal on my way back down if I stay up north.

May is the middle of the rain season on the Colorado Front Range. As you've already experienced, there's some big weather in this area. If you go north (I15 to I70) the interstates clear quickly after bad weather. If you go south through Zion and Durango, the ride is better and the scenery is fantastic however, the chance of bad weather is higher. Many of the higher passes still have snow on them in July. Personally, my choice would be to go through Zion and Durango, be prepared to lay over, enjoy the local restaurants, enjoy the ride and avoid the slab.

Well it looks more and more that I should avoid as much of the weather as possible and take either of the southern routes via Phoenix or Flagstaff. We'll see as the departure date gets nearer.

Is there a need to get there that quickly? I would advise taking any route other than interstate highways.

yup...see post #1, 3rd paragraph I don't relish the idea of slabbing it either unless the slab takes me through some nice scenery...but I understand that even the scenery up in elevation could also be obscured by the unpredictable weather that time of the year...so....
