Trip Cross Country and back set - First Timer

New 2017 RGU, must travel.

Going from Gaylord, MI to Yosemite via Northern route through Glasier. Then to Sedona, AZ, to Dallas, TX, then home sweet home of New Smyrna Beach, FL.

First time doing a multiple day/week trip on bike. Any and all advice is welcomed.

Sounds like a great adventure. I've not done the distance (multi-week) you are talking, but do a fair amount of 10-14 day trips and have these few tips to offer:
  1. Take only what you need.
  2. Get fit - long distance riding on back-to-back days can be hard on the body
  3. Drink lots of fluids while on the road
  4. Plan your trip, but don't let the plan turn into a ball and chain
  5. If you need major service along the way, call ahead to schedule and ensure they have needed parts on-hand (e.g., preferred tire)
  6. Stop and smell the roses along the way...and take pics. The trip is not as memorable if you just drive by all of the POIs.
  7. Consider doing a trip report while enroute using this forum. Chances are members will be interested in meeting-up with you along the way.
  8. Riding solo for that distance is can get pretty lonely.. Some folks prefer that, others use it as an opportunity to make new friends along the way. Figure it out early.
  9. Shit happens on the journey (e.g., weather delays, flat tires, whatever). Don't let those challenges define your adventure. Besides, there is usually a good storyline in there somewhere!
  10. Have fun. You are about to take a journey that most riders only dream of doing.
  11. If you are into the Iron Butt thing, there are segments of your trip that are perfect for that type of riding.

When you come through East Texas, give me a heads-up and I'll treat you to some great BBQ.

Some folks seek the comfort of the straight and narrow. Me? I prefer the twisted road.

P.S. I have some great roads mapped out around N. Cal and Yosemite, if you are interested. Also highly recommend you spend some time in the Smoky Mountains enroute to FL.

Thank you very much for the information. The first part of the trip is pretty tight as I am meeting the wife in Yosemite. We will spend a week there riding and I would LOVE to have any and all information on where to go and what to see, especially with the bike.

I have wanted to do this type of trip since I was out of high school - LONG TIME AGO, so i am happy to finally be able to take the time to do so. I figure I will drive between 5-8 hours per day as this is comfortable to me. Not having done this everyday for a month should prove interesting. I am doing the ride to get some alone time but always open to quick meet at the end of a day.

So, I will be in East TX near the end of Oct and I LOVE BBQ....we will have to check in as the time gets closer to see if we can work something out.

Again, that you for all the great information.....has given me some new things to consider!

When I'm running high millage days I try to stop every 100 miles and breath. Rode from Camp Wood, TX to home in Tucson, AZ(850 miles) in one day. Not for everyone, but I just wanted to be home after 3 days in the "Texas Hill Country".

Number 1 rule-Have fun!
On long trips I always eat small snacks like fruit, nuts and protein bars through out the day instead of big heavy meals.

That is quite a few miles in 1 day! WOW. I really am going to try to avoid that if I can but great advice. I planned on stopping only when the tank gets low or there is something that I just have to see.....or eat. :-)

How am I going to stay on the chunky side of things eating all that good food?

I will now pack a bag with good stuff as you suggest....did not think about it honestly. MT Dew, Reeses, and twinkles will do it.

6 gallon tank gives me a range of around 240 miles. I haven't done any multi day trips (other than overnight). My longest day has been 600 miles. Stopping every hour or so and you'll be less tired than if you ride 'till you're out of fuel. I also wouldn't get below a 1/4 tank, not knowing exactly where the next gas station is.
