/Bested my all time longest one day trip today
I had a friend who was going to go to Fort Bragg, CA for the weekend to get out of the heat in the valley where we both live. So I decided seeing as I had not been over there for about 30 years, it would be high time to take the hog out for a spin and get out of this triple digit heat, Only one problem. I had forgotten how far it was. It took me four hours to get there by the most direct route Hwy 505 to Hwy 16 Rumsey Canyon, up to Hwy 20, West to Hwy 101 to Willets then Hwy 20 to Fort Bragg. These are not freeway miles except for a few most were second gear tight ass curves, all linked one after the other for miles. By the time I reached Fort Bragg I was beat, and was considering getting a hotel for the night. But I did not bring the stuff I would need for an over night stay such and meds and CPAP machine, and my buddy i went to see was not in camp. so I decided to drive down HWY 1 for a while. Lots of cool little towns such as Mendocino to see and explore. Temps were SWEET!! nice and cool great views everywhere. I decided I did not want to go back and repeat Hwy 20 again, so decided to go down to HWY 128 and take it all the way East from the Coast back to Winters. This is a much longer and windier road. But scenic as hell. I recommend this route of you like the twisties. By the time I was half way home my neck was aching seriously enough to consider stopping for the night again. Turns out my Modular helmet is the issue All that weight hour after hour takes a toll on the muscles. My shoulder muscles were not liking it at all. If I lifted the front of the helmet with my hand I found some relief. I had not done HWY 128 clear through since high school some 40 years ago, so I was interested in seeing what had changed. Long story short I broke my one day travel distance record. I now stand at 365 miles of hard assed twisties not freeway, cruise control riding. A lot of the corners you could not even see through them to see the entire curve. I am beat. Bike ran flawlessly All in all a very nice trip and I missed most of the heat, I got into some coming home. No way to beat it when you live in it. Hwy 128 I think is as good as the Hwy from Red Bluff to the coast. Both are a real challenge at least to me. Epic road trip!
Illegitimus non carburundum. Or something to that effect. Jack of all trades, master of none.
