Pacific Coast Highway

I plan on riding from Pennsylvania to Seattle to do the Pacific Coast Highway. How many days should I plan for the PCH?

Depends on where you start. The PCH is best the farther north you are from LA, I usually start in a little town called Morro Bay and head north from there. I would say that 3 days would be a good trip, you can do it in less time but then you wouldn't enjoy the PCH as much. The PCH is a curvy winding road so you're not going to be going 55 mph much. There are tons of places to pull off and take pics which you'll love to do. Also the PCH is closed around Big Sur because of a landslide so you'll have to backtrack on that part of the road to get around the landslide. Take your time and enjoy the PCH it's a great road and the scenery is unbelievable and it's well worth the trip.

From Crescent City,CA through Oregon is a fantastic ride. Heads up a lot of Elk around.
Riding south from Seattle on 101 are you planing on starting on the Olympic Peninsula?
Another route would be to start south on 101 after crossing the Hood Canal Bridge. Hwy 101 circles the Peninsula and on the ocean side it runs only a short ways by the ocean.
Hwy 101 south along Hood Canal is great and right on the canal/Puget Sound. West to Aberdeen and on to Westport on Hwy105. It connects to Hwy101 at Raymond. Maybe spend the night in Longbeach,Wa.
Second night Florence ,OR would be a good stop,3rd night Eureka,CA. From Leggett,CA on to Hwy 1 it's beautiful but slower riding. Wears me out up down and back around, so plan on extra time here.
How far south are you riding?

Depending on how much beach walking, trail walking and exploring regional activities you like to do, plan on 1-3 days each for Washington and Oregon. California..... probably double that. You are traveling the right direction. North to South is so much easier and safer turning in and out of the scenic viewpoints without getting rear ended or t-boned. The prevailing summer wind is at your back too. IF you are a craft beer or wine lover, you might want to spend a week or two in Oregon exploring the breweries and wineries.........

So many options. We rode from Port Angeles WA to Crescent City CA last year, beautiful roads. It all depends on who and how much you want to stop. Tons of breweries, scenic vistas, and even distilleries on that road. The one thing I would warn about is that hotels and campgrounds both fill up. You are going through small coastal towns and capacity is an issue. Don't think you will just find a place as you ride. Summer time on the OR, WA coast is not good for impromptu trips.

Rode it last year. Did the same thing you are doing, from up north heading south.

We stopped at San Francisco since my ol' lady wanted to do Sonoma and Napa valley.

I have rode the southern part too, not as good as from Seattle down to San Francisco IMO.

Give yourself 6 days.

We plan on taking the scenic route from Seattle south to at least Big Sur and maybe San Diego if the scenery is worth the trouble. From wherever we get off the PCH, we will head to Death Valley, Mexican Hat Utah and then home.

I did the water system design for Mexican Hat.

Make sure the road is open again, it slid around Big Sur last year, I thought they said 18 months to get it opened up.

Just make sure your routes are all clear and open. I have done it in sections and loops. You see different things and experience the road differently depending on the direction of travel.

If you are only heading south, make sure and pull off and look back north to enjoy the views.

Better check calif. road closures. I was out there this past year. PCH had major closures, detours, one lane sections. Nothing worse than sitting in traffic not moving when you are on a bike. Some of the closures had no estimated date for repair. Here's a recent report.
