Trip South to North thru CO

Looking for decent routes from Trinidad to Cheyenne, WY that isn't I25.

I'd rather stay in the mountains for the trip.

Any suggestions?

If you are a couple of weeks away from your trip and don’t mind extra time take 36 out of Boulder to Estes Park, 34 down to Loveland, 287 to Laramie and the 210 over to Cheyenne. 287 keeps you on the west side of I25, when you get to Laramie it’s only an hour east to Cheyenne on 210. Weather can be day to day around Estes Park and south of Laramie this time of year.

Enjoy your ride.

I just did a part of that route on my way to Sturgis last year: From Trinidad, CO - 160 to Monte Vista, 285 north to I-70, go east on I-70 one exit to Silverthorne, then 9 north to Kremmling, then 40 east to 34 north past Grand Lake into Estes Park. Continue east on 34 to Loveland, then 287 north to Fort Collins. At this point you can stay on 287 to Laramie then take I-80 east to Cheyenne or take I-25 north to Cheyenne. You will see some high elevations in the Estes park area (above 10,000') so be prepared for some cold air.....we saw 30F in August. Just over 500 miles from Trinidad to Cheyenne on this route.

If your're coming up from TX and your destination is Cheyenne, there's faster ways to get thru Colorado while avoiding I-25 than going into the Rockies. Taking a route into and through the mountains will likely take a lot more time than short cutting up CO on the plains. But I made a couple suggestions on Google Maps, here they are:

Mountains:

Plains:

*Avoid US-34 and Estes Park at all costs, unless that's a bucket list destination.

Thank y'all for the suggestions. @RedRover , yep been to Estes Park several times. I can only imagine how crowded it is now!

The reason for the mountain side is that I get to see enough plains normally. If speed was important I'd stay on the flat boring part That's how I get out of TX.

In that case, take the left turn out of Clayton NM on US-412/56 west towards the Sangre de Cristo Moutains. At Eagle Nest, either turn left on US-64 over Palo Flechado Pass through Taos and Alamosa, or turn right and take the short cut on NM-38 up and over Bobcat Pass through Fort Garland to Alamosa. From Alamosa, just stay as northbound to Walden, CO. Love staying there. Cheyenne is either 2 hours northeast/east of Walden via the Snowy Mountains and Laramie, or 3 hours east via CO-17 and the super windy Cache La Poudre River valley (I prefer the latter).

Favorite food stops along that route...

Alamosa: The Rubi Slipper
Poncha Springs: Colorado I Scream & Stuff
Buena Vista: K's Dairy Delite, The Buena Viking
Leadville: Pastime Bar and Grill
Silverthorne: Mountain Lyon Cafe
Kremmling: 9 & 40 Diner
Walden: All Smoked Up BBQ
