4 days in Upstate New York

I had been planning on this little get away through the winter. What started out as an invite to 7 friends ended up being our core group of 3 that made this trip and what a great time we had. My friend Craig from NC rode up to go with us (most of you through my other posts will know he's always up for rides with us) and then there was my good buddy Jeff, who is my local bud that always rides too..I can always count on these guys and we always have a blast! We rolled out of State College on Labor Day with Old Forge, NY as our destination. As I always do, the RG goes from solo to full on tour mode for these trips so the Tour Pack and Tall Boy Seat go on the bike. Also always pack a full face helmet in the Tour Pack, in the event of rain (I will come back to this...). Anyway off we roll out of State College in the wet roads, but no rain, as it had rained/stormed much of the night until the very early morning. Looked as though we would roll in and out of rain some of this day, but as luck would have it, we never hit rain until into NY a bit and we could see it ahead. Pull over, suit up for the rain and...wait a minute, either my head grew or this helmet shrunk: try again, nope, helmet absolutely shrunk...Ah F*%#, I grabbed my wife's FF Helmet (both are plain gloss black with clear shields). My buddies just laugh their asses off and tell me that I am screwed, though Jeff admits it's something he would probably do. Well, it's raining pretty good, so I put it on as best as I can and tell them that when the worst of it clears to pull over immediately as I instantly had a headache. Lucky it was only around 12-15 miles or rain and off it came, sunny skies now. Well we land in Old Forge NY at a great little Motel, owned by a real friendly dude who also rides. We park and get us some beer across the street and sit out side our rooms having some beer and cigars, calling it a good day and laughing at my helmet mishap. I had us 2 destinations in mind while there: Whiteface Mountain and Lake Ontario all with Old Forge as our base camp. Day 2 takes us up North through some great roads, cool little tourist "villages" (why is everywhere a village in NY?), through Lake Placid (really cool town/village, not even sure at this point) and north to The Veterans Memorial Highway up Whiteface Mountain. When we get to the bottom where you pay to ride up, the sign says it's 45 at the summit (it's about 66 at bottom). Up we go, pictures to follow and as always, the pics do no justice to the place! Anyway, after the visit, we roll back down and into the Lake Placid area for some late lunch and then back to base came. All told this was about a 260 mile day on some really incredible roads. That night we eat at a little joint that came highly recommended by the Motel owner; Randy's, just 2 doors down. No issues here, awesome home cooked meals on the very inexpensive side. That night it's to rain and maybe into the next day, so we end our night as always: sitting outside our rooms with some brews and cigars figuring out our next day's plans. Day 3 is the shores of Lake Ontario: We wake to rain, lots of rain and it had been raining through the night. Wait till it stops enough to walk up town to the recommended breakfast joint, Waltz Diner. As we arrive and get seated, the skies open up again and we figure no hurry. As luck would have it, by the time we were done, it stops enough to walk back to Motel and wait out one more wave of rain. Once that clears, we saddle up, rain gear on (without FF helmet for me) due to how wet the roads were and head west. We stop at Tibbetts Point Lighthouse in Cape Vincent NY then ride up the coast of Lake Ontario a little bit to a great Brewery that we heard about, Wood Boat Brewery in Clayton, NY. Great place, great food and great beers (small sample there with a growler to go for when we got back to base camp). Anyway, back to base camp, dinner at Randy's again and beers and cigars to end our final night there. Day 4, we wake to sunny (though a bit foggy early on) skies and clear, I think it was 44 when we got rolling for home. Home by 3:30pm Thursday and a bike that desperately needs a good cleaning! We always have a blast and this year went and explored some new locations we had never been to before. We will be back to explore this area some more, as I dont even think we scratched the surface of what this area has to offer us on bikes. Total miles for us was 1147 for the 4 days. Not a crazy amount, but just enough to enjoy several days away with some friends! Until next time, enjoy the pics....

Upside down, probably best...this kids thing was at our Motel and the Pink Horse I was on the street on our way to breakfast...I thought this would be an awesome addition to NB's Pool area in Jersey for Mischief to play on!!

The views were amazing, despite there being a little fog that had not lifted completely.

Garage
Sounded like fun, good stuff. The helmet thing would have got me steamed before the "jackassss" laughter! I have 1 helmet for touring. 3/4 harley with clear shield and retractable smoke . No need for sun glass changes thru tunnels, tree groves, etc.... AND I always make sure my wife's helmets are noticeably different, just sayin....Enjoy the day bro!
