Headed to Monett, MO from MD

I have to go to Monett, MO for training on 8-19 thru 8-21. My boss forgot to make flight arrangements and pricing is a little more on short notice so I offered to ride there instead. I've been dying for a longer trip on the bike this year anyway. He said sure and he'd pick up the fuel, so I'm in.

Going to have to super slab it on the way out to get there Sunday night the 18th. Coming back I will take my time and take in some sites. Looks like route 64 thru WV & KY is the most direct route to and fro. Lexington, KY is about halfway so I'll camp there the first night.

Coming back I want to see the Arch in St. Louis, and maybe a run thru the Bourbon trail. I love bourbon! Any other sites in the area I should check out?

I have some back roads in WV and VA west of I-81 I want to hit on the way back also.

WTF kinda training you gonna get in Monett???

If you must go to Monett, in your free time, head south. Some really nice riding there. Kinda dull around Monett, as is Monett. Just remember, Missouri is a Helmet Law state, put it on before you enter. Some cops are pure assholes about it. Some even lurk in Illinois and follow riders in to Missouri, lite them up right on the state line if they have no helmet (pure assholes). Others are nicer, they just remind you to put it on.

On your way up to St. Louis, you could hit the pieces of Route 66. Hutmo probably knows them all. Stop in Devil's Elbow for some BBQ at the Elbow Inn. Itsa Biker Bar, so have fun. In St. Louis, if you are there at meal time, hit Pappy's or Bogart's Smokehouse(s) for REALLY GOOD BBQ. Either one, they are both most excellent. (I prefer Bogart's, but not by much).

If you are headed east, stay off I-70, it is about as boring as can be. I-64 is better if you must use the Interstate. Less traffic, more scenic. If you want to stay off the Interstate, US-50 is pretty good between St. Louis and Cincinnati. Good spots, mixed with some dull ones, but it is easy to follow.

If you are coming up I-44 (old US-66), stop in at Bourbeuse Valley HD. It's at the US-50 Exit. Nice little store, one of my favorites around here. It is right on a section of old 66.

Ha Ha! I have not been to Monett before, but I hear there isn't much there. A company that I rep is there called EFCO. I did hear there is a nice Bass Pro Shops there or close by.

Thanks for the tips. Good BBQ was one of the things I wanted to stop for. I'm a helmet guy anyway so the helmet law isn't a big deal, plus I think Kentucky is probably the only state I'll be in without a helmet law

Actually, there are only 3 states that have no helmet laws. All the rest have some form of law. Illinois has no law whatsoever. Most of the rest have laws that restrict it to new riders, under 21, things like that. Missouri, no if's, and's or but's, everyone wears the helmet. The only exception is for scooters under 50cc's (REALLY tiny Harley's?).

Ok, Bass Pro Shops has their HQ in Springfield, MO. That is about 50 miles from Monett. Certainly worth a trip, but check to make sure they are open before you go if you head there in the evening. If you have some extra days, ride south to Eureka Springs, AR. Fantastic place, and it just might, someday, be a location for Shark Week. Swing down there, then up thru Springfield. On your way up to Springfield, stop at Lambert's Cafe in Ozark, MO, for lunch. Be prepared to duck, they throw the rolls at you there. We're talking major league fastballs from across the room here.

The first 2 legs of my journey are done. Made it to Monett today about 4:00 CST. All superslab and pretty boring except for routes 68 in MD and 79 in WV which aren't half bad for highways.

Got caught in a decent downpour between Lexington & Louisville yesterday. Ended up scrapping my plans to camp the first night because of the rain even though it cleared out by the time I got to Louisville. The sky looked questionable. Ended up in a hotel somewhere in Indiana. Came close to getting a road shower from a semi headed eastbound on 64 in a road construction area in KY. The west bound lanes split and I was in the left lane up against the jersey barrier. Saw the shower coming so I ducked behind the windshield real quick. Thank god for that RG fairing. I'm sure the guy behind me got a good chuckle.

64 in Indiana and Illinois is boring as hell but at least the speed limit is 70
which calculates to 80 in motorcycle MPH.

2-1/2 days of work ahead of me and then I will meander back roads thru Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, WV, and VA before getting home. Going to start with Eureka Springs, AK as ONG suggested. Hopefully get in the area of Tracy & Frankie on Thursday evening so I can hit the Bourbon trail on Friday.

Eureka Springs is a really cool place. As ONG said a future shark week there would be a nice destination. Lots of cool roads and twisty at that. From Eureka I made my way north on route 23 to route 86 and then north on 65 to Bransom, MO. Some parts of 86 were nice others a little boring. I then got on route 160 east. Again parts of 160 were nice and others boring, but had the road to myself for the most part. Then route 19 north to route 60 to Van Buren, MO where I camped for the night on the Current River. The scenery was nice, but the campground was a little PO dunk.

Made my way to Sheperdsville, KY yesterday afternoon and stayed at the KOA and again tonight. 1st class campground. I highly recommend. A guy pulled in a short time ago on a bike 2-sites over. I went over to talk to him and he is from France. He is doing a cross country tour on a bike he borrowed from a friend in AZ. He didn't speak good English but sounds like he is having a blast. He was in Sturgis and I asked him if he had a good time and I got a big

Did part of the Bourbon trail today. Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, and Makers Mark. The Jim Beam tour was the best IMO of the 3. The Heaven Hill tour wasn't worth it. All you see is one building where they store barrels. if you go there just have them stamp your passport and move on. I would do the Jim Beam tour again. Got to sample a high octane bourbon they make called Bookers. That stuff will put hair on your chest for sure.

After the Poker run in Bardstown tomorrow I will continue my journey home. Tracy, Frankie, and Boxercop will be there so hopefully we will be able to see each other. Spoke to a guy in town tonight who's is going to be there and he said they expect 2,000 bikes.
