The Loneliest Road in America US-50

I am still on my way back from SWIII. Trying to decide which route to take on my way back from Medford, OR. I am thinking about taking US-50 across Nevada. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone have any advice in taking this trip. Other than taking lots of water and food. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

this is a tough time of year to be taking that road. becoming de-hydrated is a real threat. I have a friend that had issues on that trail. if not for a friendly couple in a motorhome it might have ended badly

I would take another route if possible, but do what feel you need to do

Loneliest Road

Go for it. Carry extra water. leave early. There's plenty of traffic and there are some towns.

Stay at the Hotel Nevada in Ely. TOTALLY WORTHWHILE

Totally agree. I've been on it from Fallon, NV to Colorado in August a couple of times. Carry some water and watch the gas as Hutmo said.

Read more here. I'd say go for it, sounds like there is a lot to see along the way.

I rode home along I-70 from Shark Week. There is a stretch in eastern Utah where there are no services for about 110 miles. It had a unique charm all it's own, no electric wires strung anywhere (all the scenic overlooks had solar powered LED street lights, pit toilets). It was still an interstate, but the ride was worth it. I imagine 50 will be similar, but better because it is only a 2 lane highway. Watch your gas, and make sure to carry extra water.

In theory, Theory and Reality are the same. In reality, they are different.

I went across from Carson City to where it hit the interstate in Utah just to say I did it (this was in September 2011). It was very warm even at that time, so pack plenty of water and go for it. I don't know about "plenty" of traffic as we went a good 50-60 miles and never saw a soul, but I actually thought that was kind of cool. I love traveling the mid-west, it is totally different than the east coast where there is a town every 10 miles and traffic everywhere. Once you hit the middle of the country, it is just you and the road. Enjoy the ride.

I rode it in early July and stayed at the Hotel Nevada in Ely at Hutmo's suggestion. Excellent ride, great hotel, met nice people at fireworks on the 4th. Get gas at every opportunity.

I was out west last year and did rt 50 riding. I think I was on rt 50 when I saw what people did on the side of the road was that they wrote out their first name using rocks. This was done for miles and I mean miles. Thought that was kinda neat. I did stop to add my name to the line of rocks.

Just make sure you have water and watch your gas gauge. I would do it. Did go thru death valley in aug and the temp was 125* . I know people would say don't go too hot. But if that's what you want to do, go for it.......
You only go around once !!!!
