North South Ride Routes Needed

Iím planning to do the Tail of the Dragon next spring. Looking for some good route into from Maine / New Hampshire to the Dragon that avoids the Interstates as much as possible. I would like a fairly direct route to the Dragon if possible, Thanks for the help.

I would take the Blue Ridge Parkway. Slower than a normal two lane but well worth it. We took one day to ride from Virginia boarder to Asheville. Had a free place to stay in Asheville otherwise I think you could make it closer.

Thanks, The Blue Ridge P. will be part of the plan for sure. We just need some good roads to get us that far down south.

Been a long time since I was that far east, but aren't your only options from NB thru main:
Route 1, Route 9, or I95. And even with 1 or 9, from Waterville south, I'd just hop on 95.

Or are you way up the northern end of Maine border?

I-95 on a bike ?
No way ... any road is better then that overcrowded, superslab of a death route.
Bottom line, there is no quick way from the far northeast direct to Front Royal and the start of the Skyline Drive / BRP.
I would run west across NH and Vermont into the Adirondacks, dropping south though NY state into PA., pick any good looking southern 2 lane road down to Front Royal.
After all, if you haven't been on the road, it's a good road.
Just not I-95 !

I don't know New England, but once you get down around Philly, work your way down the DelMarVa peninsula, take the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel to Virginia Beach and then west over to the BRP.

I agree on heading west, but I would get to Rt 25 in Maine cross into NH pick up rt153 north to Conway, Left on 16s to 112 west (Kancamagus Hwy) then stay on 112 into Vt to 302 west to Barre,Vt work to Waterbury,Vt....This is the destination!!!! You will pick up Route 100 south (rated 1 of the 6 best sports car & bike roads in USA) Before leaving Waterbury you must get some Heady Topper!!!! Best Beer going!!! Most pubs have it on tap. Only sold in Vermont at this time. If you like good beer? Route 100 will get you into Mass where Rt2 is nice also. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/27039/16814

Enjoy the Beer and the Views!!!

It's I95 in Maine; I95 in NJ is a nightmare. I95 in maine is a cakewalk.

I would recommend I-81 and I-84. Avoids NYC and DC and is easy to get to the BRP. How long do you have? I agree on avoiding the superslab but sometimes you just have to get there. BRP, Dragon Tail, and Skyline Drive will be great and a leisurely ride. Also don't forget to ride the Cherohala Skyway after the Dragon.

Enjoy the Ride!

Went most of the way down that way a few yrs ago, was heading to Roanoke as a general destination. We got off 95 in Augusta and never got on the slab again. 202 across to NH. Down thru Laconia and over brattleboro for the night. Went across Molly Stark trail to Bennington VT, crossed into NY and crossed the Hudson near Saugerties, then 9 for awhile, then 209 to Port Jervis. Went down thru the Delaware Water Gap thru Bushkill, night two in East Stroudwater. 209 again to 895 to Hamburg (bigass Cabelas in Hamburg). Then just followed whatever roads thru the Amish Country to Intercourse and New Holland. Went thru Lancaster , then 30 thru York, 15 to Gettysburg for night 3 at the Eisenhower Resort. Next morning made a run to Front Royal.
Then 60 miles down Skyline Drive. Dying hurricane coming up thru Roanoke, so we went east to Richmond for the night. Ended up in Virginia Beach for the night there. Ran the Chesapeake Bay bridge and DeMarVa all the way up 13 to New Smyrna, crossed the Delware and then back out thru Amish Country to Lancaster again, spent the night in York Back 30 and side roads to
East Stroudsburg and the Water Gap . Made it to Saugerties again for the night. Next day we went thru Pittsfield Mass and North Adams thru the Berkshires. Mass 2 to 10, up to Keene, 9/202 to Concord, then 202 all the back to Augusta, 95 home. Last day was a 550 miler, the boss was in tears after 14 hours in the saddle.

Unless I had all kinds of time, I think I'd take the fast route down, Run the interstate except to go around cities, and get down there in a couple days or so. Then take a week to come home, maybe.

I reject your reality, and replace it with my own..
