I met a 3 FLAGS rider on another forum -- here is the info he shared with me:
The SCMA is very loosely associated with the AMA and the ride is planned and run privately by SCMA. You do not have to be a member to do the ride but there is a entry fee paid before the lottery drawing, reimbursed if you don't get drawn. The drawing is usually done in march or early April in the Norwalk area and the fee was $250.00 when I did it last in 2004.
The start and end cities are chosen each year by " where haven't we gone lately and it was fun last time" method and the route is loosely set to do 500 mi. Per day with checkpoints open about 4 hrs each.
The routes are scenic but you don't have to follow them exactly and there is almost always a faster route to the checkpoint should you start to fall behind. The checkpoints are there just so the staff knows you are still in the game or should they go look for you(you lost, hurt etc).
There is a banquet at the end of the ride for awards all the old timers wait at the last checkpoint to see who gets in ahead of who( it's not a race but they like to rib each other) and see how many finish, there is always a couple that don't, so there is a feeling of accomplishment, a plaque for your wall and commemorative belt buckle that will get people's attention and questions.
